I had to share this, because it's so sweet.
I was reading this book in Barnes and Noble (that I had no intention of buying, so kind of stealing) about being a good mom to a boy. One of the things it was saying is that they need us to show them love, because we are the first woman they ever love and how we treat them, love them will determine how they look at relationships as adults, whether they trust woman, etc.
So, one of the things it was saying was that we need to find personal, secret ways to be loving and affectionate as they get older. They aren't going to want us to be hugging and kissing all over them in front of their friends, but they still need the affection.
A long time ago, we developed "The Austin Handshake." I've started implementing that into my affection for him.
Today, I dropped him off at school. Every day as he's getting out, I say, "Give me a kiss," and point at my cheek. Usually he'll do it, but sometimes he is embarrassed or whatever. I don't take it personally. So, this morning, he didn't want to give me a kiss, so I said, "Okay, Austin handshake." We did it...and then he gave me a huge hug and a big kiss on the cheek. SO SWEET! I love that monster.
