My uncle got married at a huge estate that had an incredible view of the city (so, expensive location) and served no food AT ALL, even though the reception started at 7. All drinks - including soda - were on guests to buy for themselves.

Relatedly, I've never understood the "no eating until the wedding party gets here" thing. Have these people never heard of appetizers? Ride in your party bus, get your photos done, whatever. But FEED THESE PEOPLE YOU INVITED TO YOUR PARTY.
Ok, what I'm getting is that you missed your chance to eat during the gap and that the dinner is not being served yet, so you are starving? No cocktail hour appetizers? Or the appetizers are gone, still waiting for dinner? I mean it sucks, but you will eat soon enough, right? The lack of booze bothers me a lot more than the lack of food.

Is that an american thing? Because I have never ever witnessed that or heard about that.

In my head the cocktail hour is for the guests to start partying while the bridal party takes pictures and finishes up all the pre reception stuff.

What, the feeding people part? Or the no food until the wedding party arrives part?
I've only ever been to one non-American wedding, though, so maybe? Either way, it's gauche as hell.

The way I read it is that they are only serving muffins, cheese, etc., so she was going to use the hour gap that she was stuck watching her nephews for (no cocktail/app hour) to run out & get some real food.
I guess this is the one time a dry wedding is a good thing, because people would be trashed. Trashed & hangry.
