There is a pretty big thread on ML discussing it. I thought it was a good interview. I think having Bruce's story out there on mainstream media will help others become more accepting to other transgendered people. I think Diane also interviewed him in a way that really helped him shine. I think she has a really beautiful soul. I don't think there was much discussion about a different name and haven't heard anything about Belinda.

Yes!
I hope this makes transgendered people feel less isolated. I also hopes this makes people like my Dad who are not inclined to be open-minded more likely to embrace the idea rather than think it is some lifestyle choice that young people will grow out of.
Diane asked him that, and he says he is not announcing a new name yet, because the press would never leave him alone. Sounds like he's taking his time and has no immediate plans for surgery, etc. Also Diane said he wants to continue to use masculine pronouns.

Yes!! I was explaining the interview to H tonight and he didn't understand anything regarding transgendered people. He was raised to believe that gay/lesbian/trans was gross, wrong, etc. H doesn't look down on people like he used to when he was younger. I can't change the way H was raised (I'm glad he's open minded since we've been together. If not, I wouldn't have married him). I'm glad having stories like this out there it will help others understand these issues and talk about them.
ETA- I hope I didn't make H sound like a total douche. He isn't. After he got away from life with his parents, he's been open about learning and accepting so much more.

Yeah, *she said the she did not want to give her name because the media wouldn't let go of it. But, although at the beginning of the interview Bruce said she wanted to continue using male pronouns, they referenced numerous amount of times towards the end of the interview that it would be the last time as Bruce and the next time we would see *her. So from what I learned, especially from underwater (I don't know how to tag, maybe someone could tag her), it seems like now we should use female pronouns.
I'm interested to see the show on E! this summer. I'm so glad this wasn't presented in a freak show/lets get ratings and exploit him type of way that the Kardashians seem to be good at. I hope once he starts dressing how he would like in public the media isn't cruel about it. It will be interesting to see a person go through this in the mainstream media for one of the first times. IMO, so many are open and accepting of gay/lesbian relationships compared to even 10 years ago, but don't have much knowledge of transgendered people. I hope that this is now openly being discussed it will be no big deal like being gay is now (at least in our part of the world).
Interesting. So based on the thread it sounds like Bruce said things like I always felt more like a woman than a man but that Bruce was taking the transition step-by-step with no concrete plan to become female? I didn't watch the interview so did I miss that part? Is it possible that Bruce is genderqueer or nonbinary?

I didn't watch the interview but if bruce is using male pronounce we use male. If Bruce is using female we use those. Someone initially said he was using her, but that was called into question later. Always use the pronouns the person in question prefers. (Just wanted to clarify here since I wasn't sure everyone would read the thread.)

A lot of people never fully transition. You don't have to have the surgery to be a transgendered male or female or to live your life as the gender you feel you are if that's not what you want. It sounds like he identifies as being a woman and will be now living as one, but is in no rush to have the surgery.

And I want to add that if you aren't certain, I was taught that you can always use the person's name. For example, "Bruce said that Bruce prefers tea with sugar and milk." Rather than, "Bruce said that he/she/they prefers tea with sugar and milk."
I admit that I have a really hard time wrapping my head around the whole transgender thing. Can someone give me a good link to read about what it's all about?

I thought one of the most shocking things of the whole interview was that 1) his desire to live as a woman is what ended his second marriage (to Linda Thompson) and 2) he actually took hormones, grew breasts and started to transition in the mid-80s. He said he kind of chickened out, met Kris, and pushed it to the back of his mind after that.
I know he had a difficult relationship with Brandon and Brody when they were kids, and was not involved in their lived much as they grew up. His struggle with the transition and what to tell or not tell them about the divorce seems to explain some of that.

Per the article on cnn.com:
"This story refers to Jenner as "he" and "his" because both ABC and E!, which is preparing a reality show about Jenner's life, say that Jenner has, for now, indicated a preference to be called "Bruce" by the press and as "he," with male pronouns instead of female."

I think the confusion came in because Bruce apparently did use her a few times during the interview. Then later said him.
But as i clarified, the right pronoun is always the one the person prefers. It's up to Bruce.

Can I ask why you have a hard time wrapping your head around transgender? I am not judging at all because up until this thread, I never really discussed this and I really have to say thank you again to UW for answering questions and thank you to the other posters discussing this so I can learn more about it.

I didn't know that Jenner was going to have a reality TV show - where did you hear that?

It's going to be on E (of course). It was supposed to air sooner, but he needed his whole family to be on board with it, so I think he did the interview as a compromise and the show is going to air this summer. It was in the news several months ago, like maybe December?

Just a few random thoughts:
The most surprisingly part was that he's a republican.
I think he will be a good advocate for the trans community.
I wonder if he'll get jail time for the car accident, though.
I found it interesting that the only living family members who didn't provide comments were Kris and the 4 Kardashian kids. (Well, and his siblings other than Pam who weren't named at all.)
The interview was good promo for his son Brandon's music.
I watched some of this and actually was warmed by how Bruce's children (not the youngest two, they weren't there) seemed to be dealing with this and trying to find the best way to support their parent. (judging -- why didn't Kylie and Kendall stop modeling and injecting lips and shit and show up for their parent on this interview?)
When Bruce's mom said how proud she was of Bruce, I thought that was wonderful, too.
At the end of the day, Bruce is finally able to be the person Bruce has always wanted to be. Bruce is at peace, I think.
I think that is a bit harsh. They are super young( even though they don't always act that way) and have to be going through a lot in this process. They did tweet support to him.
We have a teacher who transitioned and he has two teen children, one is really struggling and the other is fine. Teens are interesting.
It is awesome that he will finally be able to live his true life.
