I'd go ahead and spell it Maja. I am scandi myself so it never even occurred to me that this spelling would create difficulties, but it's not like it's a huge deal to correct if someone gets it wrong - since it's a short and straightforward name.
Sorry, but your mom is right. People are dumb, especially when it comes to names. My name is literally pronounced exactly as it is spelled, and yet people mispronounce it ALL THE TIME. it is super annoying, especially because if you cane read, there is no reason to mispronounce my name. I saw the name and thought maybe it was Maya, but I wasn't sure. Which means many people will mispronounce it. If you like the name, I personally would go with the familiar spelling (Maya) and save your kid the annoyance of having to correct people the rest of her life.
I am dumbfounded that people can mispronounce your name.
I know, right? I mean it isn't that big a deal but it is super annoying. The nurse at the hospital yesterday got it wrong. The worst was that the JP who married pronounced it wrong during our ceremony. I was pretty pissed about that, I feel like it is part of her job to get it right! She got it right mostly but mispronounced it once. My H edited our wedding video and cut it out for me because it really annoyed me.

The problem vowel in my husband's name is an "I." When translating names from the old country to English, they often used an "I" intending for it to sound like a long E. But the problem is people in the US see the I and pronounce it like a short or long I. Anyways, one time we went to a wedding where the minister kept pronouncing the girl's name with a long I since her name ended with an I. It should have been pronounced with the long E sound - it was like nails on a chalkboard sitting there the whole time. Someone didn't bother to tell him how to pronounce the bride's name?
