Did it take longer for him/her to figure out walking in public and with shoes on?
L is a great walker at home and barefoot. Just recently, walking has become his primary means of transportation while at home. He is doing great!
This afternoon we were in the backyard and he was just wearing a pair of fleece booties. He had no problem walking on the concrete patio or the grass.
We took him to the park so I put his new Stride Rite shoes on him. He wouldn't even stand up with them on. When we got home, I left them on to see if he would walk with them on at home. He cried until I took them off.
Normal? Does it just take time to get used to the shoes? Should I try a different pair?
We're going through the same thing right now. DS is barefoot 80% of the time, which I've read is preferred for early walking. We went to an outdoor festival this week and I took him out of the stroller in a grassy area and he immediately fell to the ground. Then, he reached for me to pick him up. I'm sure some of it was stranger/crowd related, but he took no steps in his sandals. He's worn them a few times at home, but usually manages to take them off within 5 minutes!
He will walk around at school. I work there, too, so I often get him and take him to visit my class. He'll walk across the building with me, so I know he can walk out of our home. But, he's usually barefoot there, too. I think this is very normal.

DD is pretty much the same. She walks perfectly fine barefoot, but stumbles a lot when we're out and she's in shoes. I generally have to hold her hand to keep her from falling a lot. I figure it will just take some time to adjust to how to walk in shoes.
I had DD walk around in her shoes at home sometimes to get used to them before we went outside in them.
I've been trying but he cries the whole time they are on, flops to the ground, and refuses to even stand.
Awww. I started with velcro shoes that have really soft soles, like the booties you have, for a few months. She also had soft soled boots for a while. So maybe she transitioned to the sneakers better?

DS had major trouble with shoes. He wouldn't let his feet touch the ground with them on -- if I tried to put him down to stand/walk, he'd pull his knees up so his feet wouldn't hit the ground. Once he would actually stand in them, he'd take these comically giant steps like he was stepping over something. All of that lasted a couple of weeks, and then he was a pro with the shoes.
Yes, all of my kids did. Early on they use their toes to help them balance and keep them vertical. With shoes, they are unable to use their toes for assistance so until they are fully able to balance on their own they will face-plant often, lol.
