I think I have finally narrowed it down to the car I want. I test drove the Acura RDX and mdx today as well. The mdx is too big, and the RDX just doesn't compare. It is hard finding reviews from current owners. If anyone does have one, care to share your pros and cons? How is the reliability, would you buy another one, etc
I have one and really like it. I am not really a car person, so my pros are things like I love the keyless entry and how the trunk closes with a button push. The only con I can think of is the seat heater kinda sucks, lol. OH and the windshield nozzles take forever to thaw when it's freezing out, that was super annoying some mornings when I was trying to defrost. I would get another one, but would probably get the cold weather package.

This is good to hear. I know volvos use to have a great reputation for reliability and safety. I don't know if that is still the case. I am hoping to buy this and in ten years give to dd1. So I have to love it enough to keep for ten years. Lol

Maintenance is expensive on Volvos long term. Since you'd be purchasing it to keep for a long time and to turn over to your kid, I would look into something that is less expensive to maintain long term.
ETA: Please don't discount this. I had a Volkswagen that required a visit to the dealer to change the headlight bulb. Seriously.

I won't discount it. I will talk to my brother. He is moving back to town in December and has always done my car stuff. He is a mechanic and rebuilds cars for fun. If he can't do it, and I would have to go to dealer for everything that would not work.

I had one before I moved and honestly, I wasn't impressed. Part of it was the dealership, but part of it was the car. I will say that I don't like big cars and the only reason we bought it was because we were having twins and wanted the cargo space. It was heavy and didn't have the pick up that I wanted/was used to having. I did have a loaner station wagon and it was much better. It didn't feel like it was as nicely built as other cars we had in the past. I had an issue with one of the windows sliding down a bit and the dealer couldn't figure it out. Stupid little things seemed to come loose or started to wiggle. The blind spot indicator system went all wonky (basically worked backwards, only indicating when something was not there) and the dealer people were idiots about it. I had to go there three times (with two infants, switching their carseats in and out without help) and only then did they figure out that the camera had fallen back in the holder and shadows were causing it to go off. One of the dealer guys said his wife turned her system off because it kept doing that. Nothing major happened, it was just all the little stuff. No problems with the heated seats, but we lived in the south. We sold the car right at 3 years, but it was because we moved overseas.

I forgot to mention that the whole reason we got it in the first place was that it has the highest possible safety rating. That was the MOST important feature for us (baby on the way). I test drove most of the other cars that had the same safety rating and liked the Volvo the best.
I have an XC60. The warranty is will expire soon, I will replace it with another XC60. I had a new one as a loaner the other day with the new upgraded engine. It is awesome.

Omg. I hadn't even thought of buying a car this way. Our girls are surely not old enough to be thinking about it this way, right??

I'm just imagining how hilarious the "technology" package will be to her and her highschool friends. Lol.

Yeah, that was one the one I test drove. I loved the new one. It made a huge difference from a used one I drove a few weeks ago.

Listen, if I tell this to dh, he will quit having a heart attack over the price. I feel like a lot of my friends in high school were handed down their parents old volvos, but that is when they would go literally forever.

The new standard engine is amazing. I had the loaner for a week and I was so in love. I had a Cayenne loaner earlier in the spring and I think it rivaled it, which is amazing.
FWIW, we also had an RDX as our Colorado car. It is a great car as well, but the lack of rear A/C vents is a deal breaker for Houston. You can't go wrong with either car.

That was a huge one for me. I said something to the salesman about it, he said "oh, they"ll be fine without their own vents". Shawn said the side eye I gave him was perfect. No, my kid is in a rear facing tank that gets really hot, rear vents matter, ass.
My neighbor has one and loves it. It was time for a new one and she got the same thing. Have you checked out the Audi Q5 or Q7 or Infiniti Q60? I test drove the Q7 two years ago and loved it but it was just a little too small for what we needed. I have an info it Qx56 (now the Q80) and love it.

I had an Infiniti qx4 for years. It was easily my favorite car. The new one (j something that turned into q something) is just too big. I sat in one yesterday. I have considered the fx35 (or whatever q number it is now) That is probably the only other car I haven't ruled out completely. I haven't looked into Audi, but I guess that is because I tend not to hear great things about them. My MIL has the Lexus 350, so that one was immediately excluded.

We test drove the Q5, it feels like a VW (and not in a good way)
DH got a used one a few months ago and absolutely loves it. It seems very reliable, but we haven't had it long. He's already talking about replacing it with the same (newer) model when he's ready though, so that seems like a good sign.

True story: 2 of my friends had those late-1980s Volvo tank-like behemoths. For some reason, they always came in gray. One just inherited it from her mom, and one bought hers, but they were both awesome.
Our neighbor does and they're not impressed. It's one of the older models and it has had transmission problems since they got it. They have replaced the transmission twice (once at Volvo's expense). I think when this transmission dies, they're not planning on doing anything but junking it.
