Subject/genre, author, then kind of by size, but not just tallest to shortest, just so it looks nice. For my son's books, if there is a series (Goosebumps, Indian in the Cupboard, The Three Detectives, etc) they would go in order of the series.
First by genre (usually 1 per shelf) and then its kind of a schmorgasbord after that depending on the shelf. Some of the shelves are stacked 2 deep because there isn't enough space and little paperbacks don't even take up half the depth.
So, my French shelf has all the boring grammar & technical books in the back, then all the novels and such (which are short and typically thin) aligned in front. I need to purge some of that out. My sci-fi fantasy books are arranged by author/in order of series. The Shakespeare section is by height, as is the nonfiction & technical books.

I'm still new here, so a little afraid to ask, but what kind of novels? Would you be willing to sell? I'm headed to France in June and really trying to brush up on my French. We'll be meeting some distant relatives, so I would like to be able to converse a little better with them.

I would be willing to sell but honestly, I don't think they'd be much good to you for brushing up on your French We're heading to France in September and they're no use to me! These are things like Madame Bovary and Jean de Florette. I'm trying to figure out brushing up my French, too! I installed DuoLingo on my phone and that helps somewhat for little details. Do you live in the Seattle area? Would you maybe be interested in meeting up a few times for coffee or something and we can practice together? I used to be highly proficient but after no one to speak to for 10 years, all I can do is constantly be aware of what I've forgotten and the mistakes I'm making

I'm in the gorge :/ (I always sort by "new posts" so never realize what board I'm on...) Otherwise, practicing over coffee would be great. I was never really fluent, but could pick up on some.
I've been doing a lot of music (on youtube) and looking up videos. I also have some pimsleur CDs I bought years ago, so try to play those in the background as well. I hope to immerse myself in it enough to hopefully pick some up. I need to start playing it while I'm sleeping, see if that helps at all too
Ours are sorted by where there is room to stash them in the house. Which means we just have random books stashed all over. No rhyme or reason to any of it. Although all of my teaching books and H's flying books are probably all grouped together somewhere.

Thank you! I meant to reply that I would check it out

I have like 1 book I refuse to get rid of. Everything else is H's and NEVER ONCE in our relationship has he re-read a book. We just move them from place to place. Bookshelves are in my office, I don't want to stare at them. That is precious space.

Just had to bump this to say I love it! I missed one night because it was a bad day, but I have it on my laptop and phone, and have reached my goal (30) all the other days. The little owl reminder annoyed me to do it last night, and I did, even though I had a class and got home late. Anyway, thanks again!

I know this isn't helpful, but my organization is the dewey decimal system. At the library I honestly don't buy books anymore. I do have some old very books that were my grandmothers but I don't have any special way of organizing them.
