I did a major purge recently. I haven't heard of the capsule wardrobe & am still far from it. I did it after reading the book I mentioned in the other thread. Getting in the mindset of only keeping what I love really helps me get rid of stuff and feel good about it!
Plus, the sooner I purge things, the more likely it is to get to the next owner while still in style!

I tried doing that. It's so hard to get rid of stuff that doesn't fit anymore. I keep telling myself, "Once I lose weight, I can wear this again". But that hasn't happened. I did get rid of stuff that's wrong for my body type at least, lol. Pencil skirt? newp.
Do you get to go shopping now that you're getting rid of everything?

I do need to work on the seasonal functionality of my wardrobe. I feel like I only have stuff for fall and winter with a few dresses for summer. Colorado is hard to figure out day to day.
I did this about five years ago. It is great! Now I do love everything in my closet (I keep it below 50 pieces). It's all easy to see, and even though there are fewer things, I find it easy to pick outfits - maybe even because there are fewer things.
I just buy when I need to replace, and for special occasion pieces. It has made my life a lot easier. I have never missed anything I gave away.
I really don't have a desire or see a need to limit things quite that severely, but I do occasional purges, probably every two or three years, and it does feel great.
I am working on this but haven't gotten that ruthless with my clothes yet...plan to though. I am actually purging my entire house with sort of the "do you love it" criteria. I am finding I need to go through the stuff twice to really weed everything out. So far about half my garage floor is full of bags & I still have several rooms to do.

I started this last year and am about to do a final pass. Our new closet is going to be half the size, so it's part necessity, but I really never wear some of the stuff!

I just read this on a blog last week and have been itching to do a major purge since then. I put it on my to do list for this week. I have so many clothes in my closet that don't fit, I need to give it up
I think he would see it as....I'm getting rid of all my clothes to buy a new wardrobe. And because I love clothes and new stuff too much to not buy anything new. So I don't think he'd trust me to keep it to a capsule. lol
Also, is this by any chance inspired by that "tidiness" book that's been sweeping the blog circuit for the past few months? Because....have you read that book? I did, and it's kind of insane. It has some good advice, and it did inspire me to do some purging and organizing, but overall it just made me think the author has some sort of compulsive disorder.
I do this from time to time but I never actually get rid of the clothes and they end up sitting in rubber maid bins in my garage and that means I can go and get the clothes back out again. I never wear them again, I just take them out thinking I will.
But sometimes I think about how happy I am with my clothes when I'm on vacation. I've only packed things that I love, that are comfortable, that work in multiple situations, that layer well and all go together, etc ... so I definitely see the appeal.
Maybe I'll see how you feel after a couple months. I do have way, way too much shit.
See, I pack a different outfit for each day of vacation. And I love each outfit! My idea of "packing light" is to bring shoes that coordinate with several outfits. LOL.

I do agree with buying for quality. I have the hardest time with dresses, but I have a favorite dress that I got from the Goodwill that was made by Jones New York, so I figured I'd try their website. I was lucky it was after Christmas and got another great dress on super sale, that makes me feel good. Old Navy and Target, I buy, but they don't last that long.

Ha!
Packing light is like my crack. I spend weeks planning possible scenarios and weather situations and ... I may be nuts.
I really need to work on it for the next time we go to Europe. I just don't care because my H doesn't mind lugging suitcases at all, and we've usually stayed in one place for 5 days or so. I can unpack and hang everything up. But for our next trip we're going to change hotels every 1-2 days and I don't want unpacking/repacking to be a PITA.
I'm obsessed with the capsule wardrobe concept. My fall/winter one came together very nicely and I love having such a clear idea of what I would like to pick up for next year.
My spring/summer capsule is proving to be a bit more difficult. I am down 32lbs from last spring/summer, super broke, and you know how our weather is this time of year. I'm hoping to get it ironed out though and have a great capsule in mind for next year, since I don't anticipate being able to get it very finely tuned this year. We got too warm too quick for me to feel like I have a good grasp on what I need for spring.
I could never do a capsule wardrobe, I like clothes too much. Each season I go though my stuff, get rid of anything that doesn't fit or I haven't worn in a while. But this is more to make room for new stuff. Like I always say, out with the old, in with the new!

Maybe I'm weird with my wardrobe situation but this doesn't seem that radical unless you have an expansive wardrobe. 35 to 40 pieces a season is a lot of clothes. I mean, how different outfits are you wearing in a 3 to 4 month period? I'm definitely a purger, constantly consigning and donating so that helps keep things simple.
I'm trying to do this now. Most of my clothes are too big for me now (bragplaint) so I don't have much. As a SAHM mom I don't really need much for clothing so I'm trying to keep it to simple pieces. When I go back to work I plan on finding an example of a great work wardrobe capsule and just buy those things.
I hate the term capsule wardrobe, but I have definitely been trying to pare down my own wardrobe. I wear business casual 5x a week, so do I really need that much weekend wear? Also just trying to buy classic pieces, especially things like dress pants that will last. I have some BR pants that are 10 years old and still look great b/c they were timeless pieces that I spent some money on.
Now if I could take my own advice for my kid, lol. She has too many clothes.

I guess it depends on your seasons - for me, I have two seasons: hot and not so hot/rainy. I wear most things year round.
I purged yesterday. I boxed up all the clothes that are too big on me and donated the ones I will never wear. I still have two drawers to go and another go through of my closet. I don't plan on capsuling my wardrobe. I wear the same stuff year-round with the exception of sweaters in the summer.
I've tried this. What it boils down to is that I dislike doing laundry more than any other household chore. I have a lot of clothes so I can avoid doing laundry.

This is why I have SO MUCH underwear. My h doesn't get it, lol.
