And let's talk about how the police are always like "We need this violence to end" when it's a cop who has been injured but when a young black man dies, everyone else needs to just calm down.
I truly do not believe the peaceful protesters are the ones destroying Baltimore. However, the teenagers or adults who are destroying/looting are not helping the issue at all. No one will ever convince me that violence like this accomplishes anything. So sad.
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I see your MLK quote and raise you: "A riot is the language of the unheard."
watching WBAL, this lawlessness is just depressing the hell out of me. The curfew is 10pm Tuesday (!) -- that makes no sense -- too late! They looted all the prescription meds from that CVS and then set it on fire hours ago.
Mondawmin Mall is where I got my driver's license (the MVA right there). Back in the day. My dad is from that part of town but moved to Baltimore County.
I admire the clergy that are out on the streets trying to stop this. Just saw a nun and cop walking together.
Were you depressed about the lawlessness of the cops who murdered Freddie Gray?
It sounds like you are saying something akin to "well I don't need privacy because I'm not doing anything wrong". Or. "If you blended in more with my norms even though my reality doesn't match yours, then your reality would be treated with more respect by me"
(typing this one handed on mobile so it is hard to clearly type everything I'm trying to express here)
Well, that was certainly a creative form of reading comprehension.
I see your MLK quote and raise you: "A riot is the language of the unheard."
Nonviolence is the answer to the crucial political and moral questions of our time: the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence. Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Stockholm, Sweden, December 11, 1964
I'm not going to get in a MLK quote-off with you. I was just acknowledging that Rev. King understood the desolation of the unheard.

Did you see that the peaceful protests in NY did justice for the black man who was murdered earlier this year in a choke hold by the police, that the lawmakers heard their cries, and convicted the police men who murdered him?
No. You do not act like a moron, cause violence and mayhem to protest violence.
[br
And they should arrest every single one of them. If a wrong was committed ( it seems like one was though the facts are unclear) you don't correct it by another wrong. Let's teach our children better.
Be outraged but don't burn buildings loot and harm people. That's not teaching anyone anything.

Yes, Freddy Gray severed his own spine. Oh, and the crime he committed? He didn't commit one.

Sorry for not teaching the children better. Most of these people are just trying to teach their kids how to survive an encounter with a police officer.
I just don't understand why the police always have to show up in full riot gear to protests. Especially those that are peaceful. There's no reason to instigate things when it's quiet.
Crowd control 101: Your mere presence escalates the situation immediately.
Things have been escalating for days though, any many police have been hurt...they need their riot gear. The police have shown restraint as many are saying...I just saw a huge building on fire. I honestly think the protesters have stayed home and kept this day of peace as family requested, this is criminal

You have your head up your ass.
I said that because I don't know all the facts. I've been at work all day. I said "it seems like one was."
I'd really like you to answer why you doubt the people rioting have never peacefully protested, volunteered their time in their community, written letters to their representatives, or voted.
I want to know why you think the opposite? Protestors continue asking for a stop to the rioting and violence.
Because I would not for a second expect any person to not break under the weight of utter desperation, even if they'd protested peacefully in the past.
In addition, why wouldn't I think some of the people who are rioting have been volunteers, have been moved to write to their representatives, to vote? Why wouldn't I?
But now I'd like to hear your answer instead of your deflection. Because I feel like there only is one answer here, and I am wondering if you have the balls to just say it.

I almost broke my ipad by hitting like so hard.
Well, they got 1. Let me golf clap on that for you.
How about when they demonize 2 children (Trayvon and Michael, in case you forgot their names) and George and Darren either got off or didn't even get brought up on charges?
Listen, everyone can armchair quarterback about what's happening in Baltimore all they want. If your people were constantly being bothered, profiled, or otherwise harassed, AND you had to watch the recent situations in our country over the death of black people, you might rage too. Let's stop acting like you wouldn't, because you don't know what you'd do. I don't know what I'd do. I want to say that I'd turn the other cheek, but based on research on racism in this country in terms of the death penalty and incarceration rates, I might throw some shit through a window. No idea.
So judge on but let's be real. Protesting and actually violently protesting is part of America's storied history as someone already pointed out. The Boston tea party was pretty violent. That tea party pissed everyone off.
This may be a dumb question, but why not start the curfew tonight? Is it just impossible given the amount of people out? Would show too much police force?
They're already using pepper balls and force to disperse crowds. I don't think they're all that concerned about showing too much police force in general, though.

Fuck you. Just say it. You think that because they're black.

Your sarcasm meter isn't working. The officer in question was not only not convicted--he wasn't even indicted.
Your reading meter isn't working. I said didn't get brought up on charges.

Well, where have you been since April 19? When Freddie died?
Don't have cable. Don't read news. Have had a child with gi virus in my home for a week and 2 children with high needs and have been generally unplugged all weekend. Work, care for kids, clean up house, finish work go to bed, repeat. Apologize for this diversion from this thread...

Then why did you go crazy on my for liking her comment so vigorously? I'm agreeing with you here?
I didn't go crazy. She posted something stupid. You posted you "liked it vigorously." I quoted both of you and was actually talking to her. You could have been sarcastic or not, I have 86 posts here and don't know you at all. Then you commented back to me that you were being sarcastic. Fair?

Hey, jalapeno was being sarcastic too. So yes, I think your sarcasm meter is broken.

Then YES. it is broken. I apologize. These is a lot of stupid happening. I think I got thrown off by people wanting their state reps being written to. MY BAD.
Stream of consciousness. Sorry if this doesn't make sense.
Every time this happens, a black man being murdered by the police, I get more and more afraid. My heart literally hurts for these men and their family. I take this very personally. I have a black father. I have a black brother. I have a black husband. I have a black son. And every time this happens, I am reminded that the police can murder them with no consequences. I feel that even if I teach my son, as my husband was taught by his father and my brother taught by my father, how to respect the police. How to say yes sir, and no sir, how to keep his hands in plain sight at all time. But now, even if he knows and does all things, it wouldn't matter. It doesn't matter how educated we are, how much WE VOTE, how many letters we write, we are still seen as black first. And the people who have sworn to serve and protect us are the same people that are killing us.
I'm scared. I'm angry. I'm hurt. I'm tired.
I'm afraid for the safety of my family that I love so much.

We all have shit to do. I feel like there is some level of social responsibility to have an idea of what is happening around you.

Liking this post seemed wrong, but I just wanted to thank you for expressing this so eloquently. I hate that you have to worry about this. Your post has me in tears.
