So this is what I am seeing on FB. All from black upper middle class people that have some ties to law enforcement.
"Baltimore had over 200 murders last year. You should have been praying. If you call this a revolution, you need to read the history books. The kids do this every Friday Anacostia High school but nobody cares. We just getting exploited for a quick buck until the next terror attack or Ebola outbreak."
".....and I would like to remind people that I am A Black.....not one of these N***** that are out there violently "protesting" There is a distinct difference. We are not the same race! #ijs #imjustserious"
"So let me just say this. They are going to continue to treat us like N**** for as long as we act like N*****. They are going to continue to exploit us for as long as we give them reason to. Sure there were way more peaceful protests than violent ones but the fact is...that's not news. Unfortunately we give them a reason to expect the worst from us. Why in the hell would loot in your own neighborhood. Who's positive attention does this get? The very sad part about this particular violent protest in Baltimore today is that it involves the very set of people that we claim to want to change people's minds about "Our young BLACK BOYS" How are we to change anyone's mind when the only way they feel they can get justice....or anything is through violence. ...and before you all start jumping on me about my post, certainly I'm not talking about all black boys, and no, racial profiling is not acceptable. Of course I do not agree with any injustice or police brutality, but not all police are bad or racist. I also want to remind people that most people have police officers in their family or who are close to them, and you want them to be safe while they are doing their jobs. As well most of us have criminals in our family who we would hope and pray would not suffer the same consequences that these victims have suffered (innocent or not). The bottom line is all of this is is a tragedy from the injustice to the violent protests. I pray for my people, the N****, the police, and the innocent victims."
This is just a sample. So how do you get upper middle class blacks (especially if they are involved in law enforcement) to see the bigger issue. I am going to post this of FB and tag them, but I will probably get told I am a police hater again. Whatever.
This is also a lot of what I'm seeing from my black fb friends.

I think just as there are white people who don't follow the news there are black people that also don't follow current events. In addition think about the news coverage that we have seen. It is all about the police exercising great restraint while thugs are tearing up their community. That is why it is so important to get balanced coverage. Yes let's talk about violence but don't you dare mourn for the fucking cvs in your news coverage and not similarly mourn for the young man whose spine was severed. But I still am more angry when I hear this from black people. I have more so heard it from older people though who feel like if they can live through the civil rights movement these young kids don't get it. Sad
You know what I think is so frustrating to me about the reaction to all this? It's that it's such BASIC human nature to eventually have had enough and react and respond. I see it every fucking day with my kids - one of them pushes and pushes the other until the other one breaks and my response is pretty much the same, "welp. this is what happens." Of course I tell them they should walk away and ignore, but it's understandable when that doesn't happen. And it shouldn't always happen, anyway, because sometimes people need to learn. Actions have consequences, this is ours. We don't get to be mad that this is happening. The only people we should be mad at is ourselves for letting it get to this point and not taking the opportunities we've had before to make a change.
And yet, somehow, we expect people to just keep taking it. To keep turning the other cheek and living a life where they worry for their children and their spouses simply because of the color of their skin. Where they have to sit down and tell their kids how to behave around cops so as not to get murdered. MURDERED. Where they have to tell them to be twice as good as every other dumbass kid out there simply because of the color of their skin. And when the worst happens, it doesn't exist for most of us, until we're forced to see it and even then, our response is to be mad at the people who are reacting to oppression and systemic racism because how dare they make us uncomfortable and make us feel unsafe or scared.
It's sickening. They can sever your spine, but god forbid you respond with anything other than a peaceful protest.

A couple of mine too. ETA - I keep posting things like Coates' article. I'm sure I'll be deleted soon.
Alright eff it. I'm starting to share and post stuff on FB. I usually try to avoid being political or polarizing or anything so even sharing some of these posts are big deals for me, so I know these shares seem mild to some of you but its a big step! I'm over the people weeping over mondawmin mall without knowing Freddie's name.
Especially the people who never would have gone to the mondawmin mall in the first place.

I just had some FB person ask if I were there would I riot. My ass said - if you were a cop would you sever a man's spine. This fool said - I don't understand your question. NAW fool. You asking about violence, I can ask questions too. NO. I done told y'all folks don't riot for shits and giggles. Charleston wasn't tore the fuck up because the gov't was like HELL and NO. We will answer folks questions and handle this shit right.
Baltimore - NAWL - we been outcheer breaking folks necks, beating up lil old ladies and paying out police brutality settlements. Why do you think shit is on fire? In the words of Chris Rock - I ain't saying it's right - but I understand. You don't victimize people and then expect them to be idle.

People love to act brand new on this topic. Like all this just started yesterday. Like Black people haven't been talking non-stop about brutality since we were brought across the Atlantic.

I don't care if he'd committed a crime that very day when he was stopped and arrested. His arrest record is irrelevant to the situation at hand. He died as a result of wrongdoings in that van, now whether it was a "rough ride" or an actual beating, doesn't matter.
Why can't people see that his past crimes mean zilch when it comes to him being murdered.

Exactly. And since when is execution without a trial an appropriate response to any crime?
I am stepping away from FaceBook--before I EXPLODE. Some of the comments from my middle/upper class African American friends are getting ridiculous. The "he deserved it/he was a criminal" or "people need to stop acting like animals" discussions are making me both sad and angry. This constant need for them (Black middle class/upper class) to distinguish themselves from the "poor, unruly Black folks" is making me upset.
It's like they're more concerned with White folks not seeing them like that instead of the issues at hand. Black boys in middle class neighborhoods are also profiled and harassed.

Right. Because even if he had committed a crime, he did not deserve to die for it. He deserved due process and justice, and in an ideal world that would mean if he was not guilty, he would be released. Baltimore is far from ideal, I know, but I'm just saying ideally.
He did not deserve to have his spine severed.
Trial trial trial. Just like Ferguson cop. Have a trial! Democracy. Everyone should be up in arms over this.
The people this speaks to already know it. The people who need to hear it are too busy in the comments section.
I mostly lurk here, but I wanted to reassure you that, in some small way, this isn't true. I am a white, middle class, educated woman and while I've never been racist, I have certainly never acknowledged my privilege until I started reading (in particular, reading this board, but I've also expanded my horizons). My understanding of systemic racism and the power of privilege has grown immeasurably since I started making a concerted effort to learn. It started in grad school, with Peggy McIntosh, but those discussions were largely, and unfortunately for all of us who participated, fairly superficial.
As it happens, I'm also a teacher of social studies in a predominantly white, very affluent private school. We just spent an hour talking about Baltimore, and when the kids come back from lunch I'm going to have them read this article, and specifically, we're going to dissect and discuss the bolded quote above. I really, truly believe that most of my students are getting this message. They desire to be agents of change and are beginning to recognize their positions as both powerful and privileged.
These messages may be falling upon many, many deaf ears, some people are listening, and talking.

I am not a regular here so I'm not sure where this goes. But a public defender friend of mine said they are in desperate need of attorneys to do intake for the 200+ who were arrested. Only 9 have been seen by a commissioner and the bails are being set really high.

but anyway, they need lawyer help.
Well it makes perfect sense. Looting comes with arrest, jail time and high bonds. Severing neck comes with...an investigation? I know I am being obnoxious. Tired.

Thank you very much for this! I commented on this article in another thread where it had been cited in another article. I plan to use this in my discussion skills class next week.
