See... I'm not judging this AT ALL. They're teenagers! lol They have no idea.
Yes. But that doesn't make it look any less unusual. I didn't see the OP saying "if you cheapass motherfuckers aren't eating at a place surrounded by other tuxes and captains of industry you may as well stay home from prom." I saw an affectionate reaction to some kids looking out of place. That's no more judgment-judgment than when everyone looks at the bride and groom taking photos in the town square where some kid was just eating a popsicle in grimy shorts because "aww" and "hee, funny!"
And that's fine! It can look unusual. I wouldn't be judging it, really. I'd be like "awwww, young and dumb...." lol

haha. Awwww. Prom on a budget!
H took me to Olives for my prom. I found out after we were married that he ate peanut butter sandwiches for weeks in order to save for it. Dedication, y'all.
We went somewhere fancy for prom dinner, but then went to Dennys and a pool hall afterward. My teenage self liked the attention of being dressed up and out of place.
For junior prom, I ordered little Caesar's pizza and we ate in the den then took pictures. To be fair, we only had like 3 restaurants in town and one was a Chili's.
Our prom included seated dinner, but I remember we went to places like Friday's and Bennigan's before our other semi-formal dances. Once a small group of us went to a fancy restaurant, and I was so picky that the only thing I found on the menu was a double-stuffed potato side dish. Chain restaurants suited me much better back then. lol.
My mom's prom date was arrested for armed robbery the weekend before her prom. He was trying to get money for the event. Sadly, he lost the date in the process. You can't make this shit up.
I'm fairly certain my group went to the Olde Spaghetti Factory for pre-prom dinner. I definitely remember that we went rock climbing afterwards. Prom hair and makeup alongside chalk bags and athletic shoes!
I... went to Burger King. I ended up being the only girl in the limo because one of the guys' date stood him up when we got to her house. He was, understandably, pissed. We had fun being stupid teenagers with paper crowns.
I also took some wedding pics in a bar. Shame on me.
OMG, I cringe at the places H and I thought were fancy when we started dating in our early 20's. LOFL. Red Lobster and Rainforest Cafe was fucking FANCY. I about died when he dropped $100 for our dinner one night. It is what is it. It's sweet.
Olive Garden and Red Lobster were for, like, rich people.
I remember eating at Buca di Beppo for one Homecoming dance. FANCY.
They served us dinner at our prom. Otherwise it would have been Applebee's. It was the 'nice' restaurant in our tiny little town (and actually it was in the next town 30 minutes away).
We went to an extremely expensive restaurant for our 7 year wedding anniversary, it was the most we have ever paid for a meal. There was a big group of prom kids there- like maybe ten of them? I was wondering how much their bill must have been, OMG.
That's cute, lol. Our prom was a whole dinner and dancing at a country club affair. Then we got changed and went to a campground to drink/smoke the rest of the night away. Memories! ;-)
What? NO! Prom is a big thing here. With the afterprom drinking being the best part, lol.
It's that grade 13 thing. We don't have that out west.
Grade 13? Our school system is so different, lol. We have elementary K-6, then high school is 7-11. Prom is after grade 11. Then we have CEGEP for 2-3 years (depending if you are pre-university or technical) and then university. Some CEGEPS and universities have proms too, but it isn't a big thing like after grade 11.
Oh and yes, the drinking is underage in grade 11, lol. Which is why it happens at a campground or someone's house, but there is usually parental supervision and parent volunteers to drive the kids back home. We are very comfortable with our underage drinking in Quebec, lol.

Junior Prom, we all worked, but we went to a local pizza joint so the guys could play the arcade games and my friend and I played the kid's games (like the whack-a-mole type game that had alligators). We got some raised eyebrows, but it was a lot of fun, and we were more into fun than fancy dinner.
Senior Prom, my boyfriend got off work late (landscaping), so he had enough time to run home, shower and dress, and we went through the taco time drive-thru on the way to prom (30 miles away).
There were some who rented limos and did the best restaurants in the area, but I think we had more fun (well, at least in junior year, the drive thru was just fast and cheap, lol.)
My proms were both at a fancy banquet hall that served dinner. Prom tickets cost $55 per person, so if that didn't include dinner it would be absurd. Both times I found a dress for under $40, so I ended up not spending too much. For other school dances, it was the norm to go to Applebees or Bennigan's for dinner beforehand.
