The True Story of Hansel and Gretel - Germany or Poland or both
The Winds of War and War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk. Great historical fiction. The setting is basically global, including America, Russia, Poland, Germany (and concentration camps).
Rocket Fighter by Mano Ziegler is a true story of a German test pilot.
The Longest Day by Cornelius Ryan, not a novel but a really interesting compilation of d-day stories.
