We'll see about the smiling happy employees as well. Heh.
In case your sister does't know, it's slated to open in the navy yard in 2017. I bet Fairway is shitting their pants.

Lol. Fairway has had a long enough run without any competition. If my sister doesn't know yet she's going to be pumped. They still drive out to NJ ocassionaly.
The stores are beautiful, the employees are helpful. The specialty departments (like the cheese department and bakery) are to die for. If I'm being lazy, and I need a dessert I don't go to a bakery, I go to Wegmans. They have a ton of organic stuff and it's reasonably priced (sometimes the same price as the non-organic). Their store brand is really good and cheap. They have an awesome variety of brands and products; seriously, you can get everything that you need from Wegmans. Their hot food bar is ridiculous; they have everything from salads to Asian to Indian to Mexican to "bar food" to Vegetarian to whatever.
So, my (slightly) dissenting opinion - there is a lot I like about the store. Much of what people have said already. But man... there is something about the layout that I HATE. Absolutely hate. I feel like it takes me longer to shop there than it does at any other store and it annoys me.
Now, I will say that having said this, when the one near us initially opened, where the bread was located was a total PITA. It was around the corner near the meat counter and just wasn't in the flow. They have changed that. i'm sure I wasn't the only one annoyed by it. So they have worked on improving it.
But I feel like I always have a hard time finding certain products. Like their cheese is spread out - and I always have to roam around their cheese/yogurt section a few times to find everything I need.
My best friend in Virginia lives right next to a Wegman's. I mean, not even across the street. It's one of those live, work, shop places where there are restaurants/bars, clothing shops, grocery/supermarkets along with an apartment complex. It's AMAZEBALLS. She goes to Wegman's for fresh food pretty much daily. Just buys what she needs for that day. I could LIVE in Wegman's. Man I wish we had one.

I have a friend from work who is moving to Rochester next week and one of the things he's most excited about is Wegman's. He was all "whatevs" about it until he went into the Pittsford store, now he's all "Uh...yeah...I see what you mean."
stbxfil lives 1 mile away from the Wegman's outside of Boston. When it first opened, they had to have police directing traffic because it was so crazy.

I will! Right now, he's looking for: some place where he can get a cheap washer and dryer, church, and farmer's market. He's got housing lined up through the UofR.

Cheap washer and dryer? That would be my house. I'm selling mine, lol.
Church? What demonination?
Farmer's Market? Rochester Public Market. Or Brighton Farmer's market. Those two are the best. Does he know anyone here?

There's supposed to be a Wegmans opening near me sometime in the next year or so. I cannot fucking wait! It's way out of my way on the other side of town, and I will still shop there.
For my BFF's bridal shower in upstate NY, we were talking about the catering, and someone suggested Tops. I about blew a gasket. STFU, the only grocery store catering worth considering is Wegmans. Obvs.

Would you still shop there regularly if you had to take public transportation or walk to get there?

Hmmm...it would probably depend on how convenient to my schedule the public transportation was and how nice the weather was for walking lol. I used to take our trolley to the farmers' market when I lived near the route, and it wasn't a big deal, because the trolley ran really frequently. But I can see how that would be a pain in the butt if the public transportation were not very convenient.

I could walk there, but walking home is a no go with grocery bags for me. There is probably a bus that is not too horrific. So.... maybe.
