Anyone have a kid react to toothpaste? We got Crest pro-health with Frozen theme on it, and Dd was so excited she went and brushed her teeth right away. About 2 hours later her face was all red and itchy. The toothpaste is the only thing different I can think of. We usually get Colgate kids.
It's possible. I can't see all the ingredients in it online. I assume it has sodium laurel sulfate in it which can be irritating to some people (myself included) or one one of the coloring agents could be giving her a reaction.

Definitely possible. I'm allergic to mint and it gives me an awful itchy rash around my mouth. Does her face itch? Which ingredients are different between the two varieties of toothpaste?
Definitely possible. DH is allergic to sodium lauryl sulfate, the ingredient in toothpaste that makes it foam. I have to buy special natural toothpaste.

I buy toothpaste without SLS in it too. I used to get weird dry skin patches at the corner of my mouth and my husband was getting mouth sores all the time that I could not solve despite being his dentist wife. I switched us to SLS free toothpaste and both of our issues are pretty much resolved. I buy Trader Joe's toothpaste, it's the best priced and easily available toothpaste I've found, assuming you have a Trader Joe's near you.
She has eczema and some allergies. I remember avoiding Crest like 2 years ago to try to stop some patches around her lips but I forget which chemical I was avoiding- nothing jumped out at me when I read the ingredients. Dunno why Colgate is better but I'll just stick to it for now. Thanks!!
Try Livionex. It is SLS free and it has peer-reviewed clinical studies showing that it have 50-75% more reduction in gingival inflammation than Colgate Total and Crest ProHealth.
It is $$, but IMO worth it if you have issues with other toothpastes. You have to buy it on their website, not the drugstore, but I have used it and really like it.
Also, how many people spring for $20 SLS-free shampoo? Just a thought.

We do not. I cycled through a bunch of natural brands until we settled on Nature's Gate, which I get at Wegmans. SLS makes DH's mouth feel sore.
caramia17 we do use SLS free shampoo, brand is Avalon Organic $9.

Sorry, I think I wasn't clear. I was just saying, if you don't want/can't handle the SLS, it is definitely something to spend money on (toothpaste and shampoo).

I don't know how many use $20 SLS free shampoo, but I do. I've been using Aubrey Naturals shampoo for years. It's a little under $20.
I think I pay $3 for Trader Joe's SLS free toothpaste. Can't beat that! I'll have to look into Livionex.
I can understand being sensitive to SLS in your mouth but not on the skin directly.
SLS is a common contact allergen. That's actually what my dermatologist thought was causing my mouth rash and itching. Mint is not nearly as common. It took 2 rounds of patch testing to figure that one out. Preservatives and fragrance are both really common contact allergens as well, and they're in nearly every type of toiletry.
Contact allergies are weird - you won't get an immediate reaction like you would with "normal" allergies. It makes it really tough to pinpoint what you're reacting to.
I also have eczema. The contact allergies are a huge cause of my eczema, but I have to eliminate grains to see it almost completely disappear.

Like I said before, I think I worded that shampoo comment wrong. I meant, lots of folks spend $$ on SLS free shampoo, but balk at paying more toothpaste, even though your oral and gingival/periodontal health are critical.
i can send you a PDF of an article I found interesting about Livionex. It essentially chelates cations (particularly zinc) decreasing both the formation of the dental pellicle and the function of matrix mettaloproteinases.
caramia17 - I read about Livionex and it sounds really cool. I ordered some because I was geeked out by it. My toothpaste is already SLS-free (Pronamel) and I'm not sensitive to it anyway, but inflammation and biofilms are super interesting to me.
It is fascinating to me, but I realize that microbiome and biofilm formation are not what gets everyone jazzed. Lol.
PS--I have no financial stake in that company, I just think it is cool.

Is this what it sounds like to my MMM friends when I post things in Spanish on Facebook?
My oldest is also SLS sensitive (like me). It causes Conner sores for both of us, not a skin reaction though. Crest is worse for me than Colgate (more SLS maybe).
I use toms of Maine sensitive SLS free with fluoride. Kids use kids my face with fluoride.

I got it yesterday, and my teeth feel so clean - like all the gunk falls off my teeth when I use it. It's like I just had a cleaning every time I brush my teeth. It's a weird, but awesome and magical feeling.
I love it too, but my H hates the no-foam aspect of no SLS.
My oldest reacts to dyes in toothpaste. We had to throw out her Oral B princess toothpaste because it has red dye in it. I was so annoyed. Never had the issue that you had, though I know it's common.
