I've mentioned Tman wanting an ice cream cake for his party (thanks a lot kwpnjumper55 for having it at D's party). I am not a fan and they are spendy. I was thinking of getting him a smaller sized one. Not personal size or anything, but smallish and then buying/making cupcakes and bringing ice cream in case the ice cream cake runs out. After all, not everyone likes ice cream cake. Right?

I don't like cake and ice cream together either, but given the choice, I will ALWAYS choose cake. I don't like to eat them at the same time, though. Like at a birthday party, I will usually decline the ice cream. And have double portion of cake if available. Then I'll have a bowl of ice cream at a different time.
Edit: I change this answer. I think if it has woop frosting, I'm going to have to choose the ice cream. BARF-O-RAMA to woop frosting.

I think you will be find doing a small one and then extra cupcakes and ice cream. I have a summer birthday and growing up I ALWAYS asked for MCC ice cream cake and never got it

That is just sad. I guess I definitely can't punk out on getting him the ice cream cake now. He'll never forget.

It was sad. My HS BFF got me one for my 17th birthday. But man it would have been fun to have one for like my 8th.
What if you get an actual cake for his party (then no worry of having to deal with melting or anything) and then get tman an ice cream cupcake thing from cold stone? www.coldstonecreamery.com/cakes/icecreamcupcakes/index.html Then he can eat it at home for his actual bday? Then maybe its kind of a win win. He still gets what he wants and you can still have a regular cake for the party without some of the hassle? maybe even have it be cheaper?

I think that's a good idea.
Fwiw- the mint ice-cream /chocolate cake From BR is my favorite
I love ice cream cake, but not w/ actual cake in it. And, not mint chocolate chip. I think you'll be OK, but lie spunbutterfly said, if there's not enough for the other kids, there might be some upset kids.
Also, cake is good, ice cream is good, they are good together (except not so good when frozen together in an ice cream cake). Now, I just want cake and/or ice cream. Thanks!

well crap. it looks like I have to make sure there is enough ice cream cake for everyone.
I really want Tman's birthday to be special since it's the big ONE ZERO, and I'm trying not to be cheap, but I can't help but try to find the less expensive route for everything.
fiddles, because even at my own son's milestone birthday party, I am feeling selfish. I don't like ice cream cake.
Yeah...I'm going to be the tough cookie here. Suck it up.
It's your son's birthday. I would just get the ice cream cake that he wants. I think you'll end up spending more money by having different kinds of desserts. And you run the risk of having either a) not enough or b) too much leftover.

Of course I'm going to get him what he wants...I will suck it up.
But, there are people who don't like ice cream cake. I'm sure I'm not the only one. So, as much as it was for me because I don't like ice cream cake, it was also for the fact that there might be others in attendance that don't like it either.

Buy just a cupcake for yourself then?
The thing I don't like about ice cream cakes is that the cake itself is SO COLD that it loses all flavor and proper texture I'll eat cake WITH ice cream sometimes, but frozen together takes away from the cake.
