Hey ladies. I had a mostly downhill half on Sunday and it was interesting so I thought I would give you a short recap. Race was 90 miles north of Atlanta, so it made for an early morning for myself and 2 of my running girlfriends. None of us knew what to expect. The race was very small, only 201 people registered for the half (they also had a 5k). It was a point to point race so we were bused to start. One horn blow and we were off. It appeared to be a fast group of runners for the most part. The crowd took off and we literally ran down a mountain (on the road of course). I had no idea what to expect as far as time and I got strep on Tuesday, but I planned to PR considering I had never run an easy half (all of mine have been pretty hilly). There were a couple of rolling hills in the first mile which helped so me down. Mile 1 was 7:35. After that, the next 7 miles were pretty speedy. The crowd spread out and I pretty much was running alone. I could see a guy ahead of me. Only 3 water stops the whole time (not ideal but it was too bad either). Well it's hard to control yourself while running downhill, so I decided to just let myself go but stay in control. After 8 miles, most the elevated had dropped (it was a 2,000 foot drop overall) and we were near town. OMG, those last 5 miles were some of the hardest I have ever run. My legs were shot after 8 downhill miles and I couldn't do anything. The last 5 are mostly rolling hills and flat. It was so hard. On mile 12, one girl passed me (ugh). I prayed she wasn't in my age group (she wasn't). I crossed the finish line so relieved to be done. The good news is I had over a 5 minute PR, finishing in 1:39:xx. I couldn't believe I went under 1:40. That made me really happy. And to top it off, I was 1st in my AG. My 2 girlfriends finished top 3 in their AG's so we all went home with some extra bling. BTW, the girl that passed me was the masters winner. It was an interesting race and not as easy as I had hoped but I did crush my old PR, so I can't complain. As for today, I cannot walk. My quads hate me but totally worth it.
