My undergrad doesn't do speakers. I didn't go to grad school #1's graduation. For grad school #2 there were 2 ceremonies - a general ceremony for all in the quad and then each individual school had the whole receive diploma thing. We had professors at both. For my individual school the students vote on the professor. We chose one who was a Nobel Laureate in economics.
Ours was Tim Russert. He gave a great speech but you could barely hear him. At the time, our college was doing renovations and had hired a non-union contractor. The unions picketed our graduation and were really loud and chanting during it. He 'shushed' them several times.
We were supposed to have him too! But he died the summer before
Did you go to drama school? Is he a serious actor outside of DS9 (true for Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, etc.)? Or maybe an alumn?
Yes, that guy. I went to a school that has a top 10 drama department and a top 10 CS/engineering department, and I majored in humanities
Auberjoiois is actually has multiple Tony nominations, and does a good bit of stage work. I recent TV work, he was in Boston Legal and played Callie's dad on Grey's.
A number of my classmates have been very successful on broadway and tv/film.
DH also went to my alma mater, but he actually studied something it's known for. He's an engineer.
The state's governor, who is rumored to be a dark horse VP candidate with Hillary. It's unlikely though. He's kind of the Sarah Palin of the liberal western Dems. He once branded "Veto" on a bunch of legislative bills. As in fire and branding iron branded.
Brian Schweitzer? I met him once at a medium-dollar fundraiser for a local elections pac in WA. I hadn't thought about it, but "Sarah Palin of the liberal western Dems" is exactly right! I hear stories that in person he is even more ... um ... "colorful".
I thought he was going to try to "run" for President though.
Yep, him. What's frustrating is that he was a great governor. Really, really good. But towards the end he became such a charachiture of an"westerner," with his bolo tie and always-present sheepdog, that he undercut his own image and credibility. He's pretty funny though. Once, in Meet the Press, he was asked about the priority of Building a 8 foot tall border fence with Mexico. He deadpanned, "well, as long as Wal-Mart sells 10 foot leaders, I'm not sure what the point is...."

I didn't go to my Ph.D. graduation (attended a family wedding on the opposite coast instead) so I just googled who the speaker was. Doesn't look like I missed much: Gilbert M. Grosvenor (Former President, National Geographic Society)

I don't remember, but somebody super boring. The year before mine, we had Orson Scott Card, and his speech was awesome. The year before that was supposed to be Douglas Adams, but he died 4 days before graduation day.

Dick Cheney was the keynote speaker. I went to a large Big 10 university, so I skipped the main program that Cheney spoke at and just attended the ceremony for my degree where I actually got to walk and have my name called.
I don't remember his name, but he was some sort of sports writer for a Boston paper, or maybe an ESPN type site? He was interesting enough. I would have loved to have Bill Nye!
Bob Ryan? Bill Simmons? Dan Shaughnessy? (sp?) Peter Gammons?
Ding ding ding!!!
Bob Ryan. I couldn't think of it when I posted. I liked his speech.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
