MARYLAND (WABC) -- A substitute teacher has been pulled from a Washington D.C. area classroom after he was caught on camera hitting sixth graders with a leather belt, apparently trying to break up a fight.
In the video, you can hear the children screaming as they try to run away from the violent thrashes.
That video has now gone viral, drawing shock and anger from some parents, and support from others.
The incident took place last Friday at Gwynn Park Middle School in Maryland.
The circumstances behind the teacher's behavior are still unknown, but town residents and parents are outraged.
"I just couldn't imagine a grown man hitting my child," parent Edward Torrence said.
The substitute teacher has since been removed from the classroom. The school called his actions "improper" and released the following statement:
"Prince George's County Public Schools does not condone this type of behavior and it is not representative of the level of professionalism and respectful conduct of the team at the school."
I am not a fan of spankings in general and do not believe in corporal punishment in schools especially. And yet I'm feeling some kind of way about these children thinking they can just brawl out in the middle of classtime. I don't like that they got hit with a belt, yet impressed with how fast that fight broke up, as I've seen much bigger security guards take way longer to get fights to peel off.
All I know is, right or wrong, those children won't fight in class when he is subbing again.

One of my high school teachers was seriously injured when he tried to break up a fight, and he was out of school for months in recovery. This guy is a big guy and I don't think of sixth graders as being that big, but there are multiple reasons he may have felt this was the best option for the safety of everyone involved.

It happens in my school on a regular basis. On my first day, the principal told me, "Do not step in to break up fights. We need you here more than we need you injured." We're to call security instead. Every day in class, I have kids who playfully/not-so-playfully shove, smack and chase each other.

DH is a designated fight controller at his school. They have to do this day-long training, and the trained teachers (all male) are the only ones who are supposed to intervene. They have to use some super secret method I'm not allowed to know about, apparently.
I'm not saying this sub made the wisest call, but I'm not saying I wouldn't have done the same thing.

I taught in this district for 5 years. He won't ever be subbing there, if anywhere, again.

And I am sure he is glad about it too. I think I heard that he is retired military and school administrator, they must have been horrible to warrant this response.
