I decided on a whim to look at some job postings today since I've been bored at my job for a long time now. Up until recently the benefits were great so I stuck it out. Well, bam, what I consider to be a dream job at another company was posted a couple of days ago. I haven't been this excited about something in a decade.
I have the minimum qualifications but have spent the past 10 years on a career trajectory that has taken me farther and farther away from my roots. To provide context, pretend I work in the advertising industry but over time moved into accounts instead of creative. I want to go back to the creative path.
How should I go about this? I feel like I can make a great case on why my experience sets me up to succeed if I'm in an interview, but doing that in a cover letter seems daunting. It would be 5 pages long.
Does anyone have a good outline or writing prompts for a cover letter? Tips and tricks? I'm so nervous about completely blowing a first impression.
Try to find a person at the org via the Internet or LinkedIn to send your cover letter/resume to - via mail in a big envelope.
In the cover letter put a related to the desired position an achievement - preferably quantifiable - of something you've accomplished.
good luck!
Unfortunately they will only consider applications submitted through their online portal. I can upload Word documents though.
I'd apply online AND send it in the mail. When I did this, the VP passed it on to the manager and because it came from a VP they thought he knew me... and thought they better meet with me
