So, we knew my dog's mama was a Boxer (or at least Boxer mix). We did a DNA test and the results are surprising and kind of funny! I believe it, though, as looks aren't totally indicative of genetics. So here's our pup. Aside from the lack of the Boxer's characteristic snub-nose snout, she looks very much like a Boxer:
And here are the results!
How cool is that? Fascinating! And @kizmet, our doggies are related(somehow)!!!
Wow, that's interesting. I should get that done on our dog, we always said he was a cross between a Great Dane and a Fruit Bat. It would be nice to get some answers on his background.

And, of course, their family tree is just a best guess based on the DNA percentages. They really have no idea about the specific parent/grandparent/great-grandparent breakdown.
We used Wisdom Panel, btw, in case anyone is interested!

Another interesting thing is that she has a lot of Boxer "personality traits"! Our dog trainer along with other people who've had Boxers, all said the same things about the way she moves, how she stands, and of course the "boxing" she does with her paws, as being "classic Boxer" LOL
I always thought those tests were very unreliable. I'd love to test my guy but I really wouldn't be able to trust the results.
I dont put 100% stock in it, of course. And they do say that they can't tell you with certainty because they are coding genetic markers, and only go back 3 generations. When you submit the samples, all they want are the actual sample- no pictures or descriptions of the dog. We knew she was part Boxer, and she definitely shows the most traits of that breed.

LOL We always say our is part Bernese, part Aussie and part piranha. lol

My friend's dog is "Part Great Dane, part Lab, part Unicorn!"
and Emilie - how freaking cute is that puppy?! I die!
I KNOW!!!! She is the snuggliest thing EVAH! I'm away for 5 days right now and I miss her more than I miss my husband and kids I'm only sort of kidding.

This is Jordan, he is the goofiest dog you will meet but he's a total sweetie-pie. I'm telling you, there has to be fruit bat in his family tree.
We got it done, and ours was primarily a basset hound/golden retriever mix with a whole bunch of other stuff tossed in. This was unsurprising, because she looks exactly like what you would get if you crossed a basset hound with a golden retriever.
I want to do it with Nala. We are not entirely certain her father is a husky. She has lots of Pitt bull characteristics, including a stubborn refusal to grow fur and a tank-like build. I mean, realistically, there's no chance of that at all, we know who her father is and she has his blue eyes, but I still want to check.

People, don't waste your money on this. It's so inaccurate it's laughable.
Obviously, we did it more for entertainment than anything because we know they're not completely accurate. But is it really so inaccurate that it's laughable? Almost everything I've found online says that the tests are not always 100% accurate but that they have improved significantly over the last few years.

They're about as accurate as human ones... which means if you throw a dart at a dart board eventually you're going to hit the target.
I kind of want to do this for Rox. She is obviously part lab but we are thinking she is also part beagle, given her smaller size for a lab and her beagle-like qualities. I have always been curious.
1) More puppy pics. 2) I tried this with my dog but he was being very uncooperative and wouldn't do the cheek swab. Found the swab months later behind the bookcase covered in dog hair, dust, and random grime. So much for a pristine genetic test...
