Lincoln had an accident early this morning and it soaked through to his mattress, it was really wet. I tried to clean it but it still smells and the pee made it into the foam. Is there any way to really clean it? I'm just planning on tossing it and getting him a new one at this point.
Sunshine? Spray it with some disinfectant or some anti-odor stuff and then put it in the sun to dry out. See how it is afterwards.
I did that, it's been outside for 3 hours and it is dry. I lysoled it and used a dog pee odor and stain fabric cleaner but I just don't know how far down the pee seeped into the mattress. I know it smells clean but it is actually clean?
Get some natures promise from the pet store and use it on the stain. Putting it outside to dry after that if you can is even better.
Natures miracle, and there is also a great product called Eco-88 that is wonderful for this. J has had far too many accidents on our couch, and we spray this, leave it and smell/stain is gone. Good luck!
I think if it went pretty deep in maybe pour some on. I am not sure how much it will penetrate with spraying, but I guess if you sprayed enough it may. I really love vinegar to get pee smell out. I think it was fusion who told me to use it in the wash when I asked about smelly pee clothes. I would was things like 2-3 times and it would still stink like pee. I also didn't rinse the pee either at that point.
We also use vinegar if our dog pees on the floor as part of the clean up process.
Okay, so I just went to check on it and it still smells heavily of pee and slightly like the odor remover. I used a dog urine removal spray, a fabric cleaner and a water/vinegar spray I use for Lincoln's clothes and it's still gross. I'm afraid to add anymore and risk the foam not drying all the way and it getting moldy.
I don't think I discovered it in time. I think he peed early this morning but still stayed asleep so it had time to soak in a bit? So the cleaners just aren't able to clean it deep enough.
And Lincoln did this to Calvin while I was out back trying different cleaning concoctions. Maybe I should just make him sleep on the urine soaked mattress as punishment
I think for peace of mind, I'll just buy a new one so I KNOW it is for sure clean. It's an Ikea mattress and it's only $60. This will be Calvin's mattress once we move and Lincoln gets a twin, so I would hate to give him a mattress that isn't 100% clean.
Thank you for all your input! I'm going to buy some Nature's Miracle to have on hand too!
I'd be tempted to keep it until you move and then get a new one as you are moving before too long. One less thing to worry about moving!
I know
I was thinking that as well but we're already getting rid of most of our furniture (dining room table, couch, entertainment center, etc) since it's worn out, so it won't be too big of a deal to move it.
katie success! I made a 1/2 cup hot water and 1/2 cup vinegar mixture and dumped it on the spot then squeezed out the excess moisture. Its 90% dried and no urine smell! I was afraid to drench it but the liquid was easily squeezed out. Thank you!
I basically tried everyone's suggestions so thank you to all!

Dude, vinegar is like witchcraft. Or science. Whatever. It's a miracle worker. I put vinegar in ever load of laundry now, to get rid of funky smells, since we use unscented detergent.
