I would say rent a rug doctor and try cleaning yourself. If getting rid of it is already an option, why not try to salvage it cheaply. You may ruin it, but you may have tossed it anyways.
I would try eucalan. It's a wool wash made for cloth diapers so that you don't remove the lanolin. I would try that with a scrub brush first, but you'll need a sunny spot to dry because woo, is super absorbent.
I would try to get a second quote for the cleaning. I usually pay around $80/rug to have someone come to the house. Usually I need to have two or three things cleaned at a time, but it is much cheaper than $200/rug.
