We currently have a queen sized Serta iComfort, which we really like, but we really need a King sized bed. We priced the king iComfort, but also have looked at Sleep Number. We love the idea that it would be adjustable and we could customize it to how we feel on a particular night (elevate feet, elevate head, firmer/softer, etc). The problem is that the one we want (memory foam top, split king) is about $7000. THAT IS THE COST OF A CAR. Or a really nice vacation. I just can't wrap my head around the cost.
We know a lot of people who LOVE their Sleep Number beds and rave about how well they sleep. We can afford it without any impact on our savings. We just bought a house and liquidated some assets for closing costs, furniture, landscaping, and incidentals, and have come I under budget on other items leaving room for us to buy a more expensive mattress than we anticipated. But $7000 just seems ridiculous, right? When I think of all of the things we could buy with that money, my head spins.
If you have a sleep number, can you tell me how much you like it? Is there any universe where it could be worth that much money??
We have a sleep number bed and we love it. But we do not have the split kind. They didn't make that when we bought our bed. But what has always given me pause about those is that you would have to buy your sheets from sleep Number. And that would annoy me.
But we love our SN bed. It really is great to be able to have different levels of firmness.

Couldn't you just buy twin fitted sheets and King flat?

The one we are looking at is only split on the top half, not all the way down. We may just go with the regular adjustable king to save some money, but the "partner snore" feature is really appealing.
We tried one at the store and hated it. Have you tried one yet? Have you looked into the foam mattress beds?
We tried several in the store. The "special edition" one (read: cheapest) wasn't good, but the more expensive models with thicker pillow tops or memory foam were amazing, especially the adjustable ones.
We really like our current memory foam mattress, but it's a little too soft for me sometimes (but perfect for my husband) and I don't like not being able to sit up and read or sit in bed and breastfeed.
We have a sleep number bed. I'm ehh about it. I don't know the specs on it, bc my parents bought it. We had a tempurpedic (sp?) and I didn't love it. My parents wanted one, so we swapped with them. I like a softer mattress, and I don't feel like this gets that soft and cushy. DH likes it though. I need to see what type of mattress we have in our guest room bc I loooove that one.

We have/had one and we loved it. I miss it so much (we didn't bring it when we temporarily moved to the UK). I can't wait to have it back. We had a queen mattress with the two air chambers, but not one that moved. It was worth it to me.
I didn't like ours. It was too lightweight so it bounced a ton whenever DH rolled over. I also didn't think it felt that great and it was one of the upgraded ones with the nice topper. Still felt like just an insanely expensive air mattress to me. I love my cheap memory foam Tempurpedic knock off one from Overstock 1000x more.

We had a 'cheaper' model for about 6 years. It is now in the guest room (which is a pain because we have to show people how to use it) and we bought a used pillowtop off of a friend cheap. Being able to adjust the firmness is nice but over time it just wasn't comfortable. It did move a lot, and we kind of had to stay on our individual sides of the bed. So if I had the bed to myself, I couldn't sleep in the middle because that was the hard spot between the two air bubbles.
The adjustable option sounds very neat but being worth it just depends on whether you would actually use it. Being able to sit up to read and hold a baby sounds awesome but I know I would still just go elsewhere to not bother DH.
We're moving as well and upgrading from a queen to a king. We just ordered a Serta on Friday that was a lot less than $7k! We went to a Mattress Warehouse that has a diagnostic tool to help determine the best bed types for you. They will always talk you out of Select Comfort, but it might be worth checking out before pulling the trigger on $7k. If you still love the idea, go for it!
I would advise laying on one in a store first. Some people love them, some hate them.
We didn't want to pay SN prices, so after much research we found Innomax....an older company that makes a far superior and far cheaper air mattress.
They sell them all over the place, but also from mail order at Sam's Club under the name "Dual Digital". We ordered from there because they have free returns.
Sleep Number advertises free returns but they make you pay $$$ to ship it back. And the construction is crap.
We didn't get the split king, but we got a king with two air bags and no pillow top, the most basic king model. Then we bought a gel foam from brooklynbedding.com.
We ended up spending about $1500 total.
I would search a lot of mattress forums and reviews for more info. The big name brand mattresses are all pretty hyped up, overpriced, and cheaply made. They have no revolutionary methods of manufacturing over other smaller companies.
We just have one of the cheaper Sleep Numbers. We like it, but don't love it. Before I got used to it, it did seem too much like just a fancy air mattress. So we added 3" foam topper. We've had it for a couple years now. It works best for us because H needs a hard mattress and I need soft.

What is the brand name on this? I'm interested.
I think we got a Serta one.
I'd be careful about Tuft and Needle. They get tons of good Amazon reviews, but go through and read the one star reviews. One of them pointed out that most of them aren't verified purchases which seemed kind of sketchy.
We have a middle of the road one. Overall, it has served us well and I sleep comfortably. To me it is just another mattress, and I and would consider a different type when it is time to replace it. However, DH LOVES it and says it will be what we buy again.
My sister and her DH have one and they swear by it. They were the ones that convinced us to give it a try. They have completely different sleep preferences and one sleeps with their number in the 30s and the other in the 80s. Theirs is the most basic one and it is not as comfortable as ours. I think the upgrades are worth it but price-wise it hurts!
