Yes, definitely to the pointing down. I point down but then sometimes by the time I've finished doing the diaper up it has moved again so I always stick my fingers in the leg holes to do another "sweep" whle simultaneously pulling the butt ruffle out. And ditto pp about the balls constantly changing and baby boners. Oh, and I always put the clean diaper under the dirty one, use the front of the dirty one to do the initial wipe, fold it down to finish wiping (with wipes), fold up the dirty diaper and wipes and then hold the front of the clean diaper closed over the penis while I'm putting the old diaper in the garbage before doing the new one up. Never leave the penis exposed or you (or the baby) will get wet!
Also, when I first open the diaper, I hold it closed again for a second. It's like the penis senses freedom and pees as soon as it is exposed to air.
Not sure if he's circ'ed or not, but there is nothing special you need to do for an uncirc'ed penis (despite what the olds may tell you). You clean it just like you do a finger. No retractions or anything crazy like that.
I wouldn't have known to lift the scrotum if a NICU nurse hadn't commented on it! Same for pointing it down!
My tip is- when you start to open the diaper, if he has what I call a baby boner, or BB, CLOSE the diaper, do not pass go!!! BBs=golden showers in my house!

This thread made me laugh out loud. Every bit is true. Ds peed over his head and hit the wall when he was about a week old, it was impressive and when I learned to point it down. You got great advice rugbywife and congratulations!
I had more success with Huggies and Costco's Kirkland than Pampers with my DS, but I'm hoping that's not the case this time, since I've ordered a few cases of Pampers.
Pointing down, covering immediately after the first shock of air, and not being shocked by boners are the big things.
There may have been a discussion in my staff room last week about "pee-pee tee pees" and why they might be important. I never used them, but a cloth or the original diaper works just as well.
I've heard the tee pees are wholly ineffective. We use washcloths.
Pee pee tee pees are totally ineffective. The pee runs out the side!
I bought a cheap pack of washcloths at Target to use as defense.

I haven't used the tents but I can see how they wouldn't work. Even trying to cover it with a diaper doesn't work sometimes because it ends up running down his hips or thighs. Plus when the baby is wiggly (and really, they pretty much always are, lol) it probably won't stay in place!
Breast pads make awesome covers during diaper changes. Small enough to not get in the way, but large and absorbable enough to catch most or all of the pee. I used them every time because I was never fast enough to react once the pee started and just saved the pad for next time if he didn't wet it.
