I agree on avoiding clothing. Sizing is PITA, and you'll end up saying you're not the Gap dammit!
Tone on tone logos can give a subtle, sophisticated style that doesn't scream "this was a work freebie."
Items I kept around: Stainless steel insulated mug Sweatshirt blanket (my favorite) Joural book notepads, top spiral is nice for lefties Portable cell phone charger Picnic blanket Insulted cooler
Does your marketing dept work with a promotional products vendor? If so, work through them. The pricing and quality will be better. Pre-production samples are worth it to make sure colors etc are right. If not, someone above mentioned staples promotional products. Theyd likely be fine for a one-off order.
I've gotten the phone charger thingee, which seemed like a good idea. Others that I've liked are tote bags (can never have too many), pens (another thing you can't get enough of), bottle openers.
Things I find annoying: coffee mugs/water bottles/etc, unless they are of super-high quality (camelback, Nalgene, tervis, etc).
Things I've never seen, but think might be useful: corkscrew, space-bags or packing cubes, wet bags (not just totes, but the ones that can hold wet stuff), or freezer bags (again, a bit different than your average tote)...
I was going to suggest this - or one of the car escape things, that PP suggested. I know you didn't want an electronics thing, but I think this would be super handy to have.

On of our vendors gave us a nice flashlight once. It's a medium sized Swiss Army one, it's useful.
DH's company always gives them a credit for clothing out of the catalog. Usually it's enough to buy something but they also have the option of paying the difference if they choose expensive item.
