Ugh, idk, I have the same problem. I think I'm just going to order a bunch from zappos and hope that some of them fit.
I have a few pairs of Life Stride- total old lady brand, but their wides fit me really well, and every once in a while I can find a non totally fugly pair.
I recommend Clarks for wide feet because the actual sole is made wider for their wide width shoes. Some "wide" shoes only have more fabric on the upper, but the foot is still squished since the sole is the same size as a regular shoe.
How big are your feet? for sneakers & my running shoes I wear men's shoes sunce they're wider than women's. For flats & heels, i just try stuff out from Zappos until I find a winner.
My feet are slightly wider than many normal width shoes but often too narrow for wide width shoes, so I get you on the shoe issues.
What styles of shoes are you looking for, work appropriate, casual, flats, heels?
All the above But mostly work and sandals
I had success in the past for comfortable work shoes with fitzwell brand on zappos. I don't know how high you like going but I think most, if not all their styles come in wide width. Plus they have gel type cushions inside so they're really cushy. I used a pair similar to these for work and I was on my feet for hours without issue.
Eta: some of the styles are very old lady but if you weed through there are some cute ones
I can attest that the Payless Dexflex wide shoes are really comfortable and are a truly wide width. I couldn't wear mine anymore post-pregnancy despite having a wider than average foot normally.

I have a pair of Rockports and they are reasonably comfortable. I would recommend Zappos and just keep trying different shoes. Some are better than others.
I love my birkenstocks... but then again I'm oh so very not fashionable and have been wearing them for damn near ever.
I'm a 9-10 W depending on the maker. I need help too
For shoes that are rather unisexual, men's shoes really work well. A 9-10W in women translates to an 8-9M in men. So I buy a lot of my workout shoes, loafers and topsiders in the men's section. Second advantage is that since that is a rather small size in men, there tend to be more in the sales rack. I remember scoring a pair of Cole Haan loafers at a ridiculous discount and realizing that they were pretty much like the women's.
Secondly, I guess manufacturers think that men are harder on shoes and tend to make them sturdier. I've found that my men's workout shoes do not break down as early as the women's....so they have a bit more support.
For wide women's shoes, I've found that Clarks, Merrills, New Balance and Mephistos seem to work best. I avoid Nike like the plague, as they run narrow. Other brands are hit and miss for me.

I usually just go straight to Zappos especially for sneakers. I can never find anything I like in wide widths in stores. I have had a little luck with Maurice's of all places. The Converse All Stars from Target fit well too.
Sadly Nordstrom was not helpful yesterday. Maybe I need to go when it's an off time
I'd just go to their website and choose your size & width. That way you're just looking at what you could actually get. I've found that they don't carry a lot of wides in-store.
