I'm shopping for furniture for our porch. I'm considering mixing styles but everywhere I look, porches have matching furniture. I would really like to have pieces with solid cushions and something patterned to coordinate. Matchy-matchy is frowned upon indoors, but why is it the go to outdoors?
Here's what I was considering: 2 of these couches And two chairs (e.g., these) in a coordinating sunbrella fabric (maybe stripes).
Do you think mixing the wicker & metal will look good? I was hoping the complementary fabrics & pillows would tie it together.
Alternatively, I could buy from this line of wicker and buy the chairs separately in coordinating fabric. So the furniture would match but the fabrics would be complementary. This would be more expensive, and I'm a little hesitant b/c I can't try out the sofas in person.

I think you can mix fine but I don't personally care for those two together, I prefer a more simple couch, like these. I think they would look nice with the chairs you picked
I am not really a fan of the couch style, but I do think that it could look nice with the metal chairs.
Looking at the photo of the metal chairs that showed up first, without the cushions, threw me for a minute. The photo with the cushions was what sold me.

Hmm, I think those would work better together. I really want a traditional wicker set though. Would teak chairs look totally out of left field? Probably, right?
I love the idea of mix and match and actually see it quite often here with those that have a more flea market/vintage/eclectic style.
I think people don't do it more because patio furniture comes in sets usually and people buy it on end of summer clearance that way, so they take what they got basically, kwim?
I love mix and match but I agree I don't know if those go together. They're both so dark and formal. I think for it to work you need more formal pieces and something a but more "fun" or at least not in the same color scheme.

I hope it's OK, because this is what we are doing. We have a faux wicker sectional and chairs from Home Depot, a wrought iron looking aluminum table and chairs that we got from Craigslist and I have to de-rust and paint, and a set of plastic Adirondack-like chairs that our neighbor was throwing away that I will attempt to paint. Hopefully it will look OK if I keep the cushions in the same color scheme. None of it is put together/painted yet, so we shall see, I guess.
I like your chairs a lot better than the couches. The couch is too flared, or something. I like this one's shape better with your chairs, though you probably want a darker wicker. How about this?

I like that one, is that traditional enough wicker for you? I think the shape of it works better with the chairs you liked

We decided to go with this couch. Less flared and the scale will work better w/2 couches facing one another.
I'm not sure which color though (spa, cilantro, wheat, or mushroom) and I'm still torn on whether to mix & match. ruthie7532 it's sort of similar to the one you posted
