I don't normally post here but hopefully you ladies can help me out! I have been struggling for ideas on a potted plant for our back porch. It is partial shade, zone 7 and I would like something taller. There are two main problems. I'm terrible at remembering to water and last year I left our poor yuccas out through the winter. Obviously that didn't go well. I should've brought them in, but one of our cats will eat any plant he can find and we have had many a vet visit or mangled plant as a result.
So is there a tall potted plant that will survive fairly cold winters and a black thumb? I should put fake plants out there, huh?

What do you mean by tall? Be specific.
Yucca is hardy in zone 7. There is no reason why you should have to bring it inside to overwinter; and it's one of the LEAST demanding plants as far as water needs, so if you killed that, maybe you do need fake plants.

About 2-3 feet tall.
Yeah I remember to water mayyyyybe once a month. I do a better in the summer. I also do a terrible job factoring in weather. I just really don't know what I'm doing but I keep trying. My succulents are still alive, so there's that.

I actually think yucca is a good choice if you can remember to water it. I like yucca. Some species get tall, and some stay close to the ground. Try again. Having plants (real live ones) around us is a good thing. It benefits the environment and it promotes health and well being for YOU. Unfortunately, they can't do anything to get our attention when they need something... we have to go to them, and make an assessment every time. I'm glad you're willing to try again!
I vote yucca again. Some of them tolerate cold better then others if you are worried about colder than is usual winter weather. Also, could you move the yucca off the porch into the yard so it will get rain during the winter?
