omfg. She was totally snooping. There's no way you can see someone else's texts in that level of detail with only a passing glance. I'm glad you reported her, and I'm glad your HR sounds like it will actually take action. I hope she's fired for it, honestly. That level of snooping, then gossiping about it, is so far over the line I can't even imagine continuing to work with her. I'm so sorry this happened to you.
If she isn't fired, I hope she leaves your department soon. Until then, give her the worst possible work you can come up with, preferably something that takes her out of your seating area. And I would make a point of demonstrably hiding stuff when you're in her presence. Make eye contact while you lock your drawer, if she approaches you while you're holding your phone, make a point of hiding it before you speak with her, and don't go to lunch with her anymore, let alone use your phone near her. In fact, I would probably freeze her out for anything non-work related.

I'm sorry this happened the way it did. littleduck, and I think my response has already been covered by others, but I dont think this was naive on her part. Maybe malicious is too strong, but she READ YOUR TEXTS , to your H no less, and then SHARED THEM WITH COWORKERS. Since you say she's a floater I'm going with the idea she was trying to fit in and shared to be part of the gang. I'm really glad you confronted her, but I'd still bring it to HR.
Maybe in effigy. Otherwise, there's that whole "lawful" thing.
I am glad that you reported her because there is no way she could have gotten that detailed information without time and effort. Not even with super-human vision unless she also has a photographic memory. That is definitely a chargeable offense if not a fireable one because holy HIPAA violation. I am so sorry you have to deal with this floating turdblossom.
