I don't do this. None of my other runner friends do this. He is an outlier. You are the winner.
He should have to stop doing this.
I will say that I have posted pictures of horrible blisters on facebook before, and so did all my runner friends doing the same, really hard, long race.
He also needs new shoes. He shouldn't have lost so many toenails. I'd cut that shit off at the pass.
If he's losing toenails, his shoes are all sorts of wrong. Get him to a true running store to get fitted properly and stop the madness!! Oh and EWWWWWWWW. that's nasty.
Years ago I went to a "Things People Collect" exhibit and there was a lady who saved all the hair she brushed off her cat. Jars and jars of cat hair. Until this moment I wasn't sure if there could be a stranger collection.
I can say that neither H or I have ever lost a toenail from running. Maybe we aren't real runners. H lost one from dropping a weight on his foot at the gym though.

See that is not gross to me, lol. I like to ball it up to make a little kitten. Then I'm sad when I have to throw the kitten away.

That's not necessarily true. I lose a toenail with every marathon. It has nothing to do with the fit of my shoes, and it has happened over a variety of models. It might not help this disgusting issue. She needs to take a stand and throw that shit away. This will not be tolerated!
Late to the party- haven't had any fall off due to running (because I'd have to run for that to happen), but I had one of my big toe nails taken off due to an infection and, um, no, I didn't ask to keep it.
Can someone explain running your toenails off? I didn't know this was a "thing" for runners.
Friction. It can be caused by a variety of things (shoes are too small/big, downhill running, running form, socks, etc.), but it's from repeated friction on the nail. It only happens for me, during my races of longer distance. Mostly marathons. I know some people will get black toenails, from their toe repeatedly hitting the front of their shoe. I've never had that happen. I lose one toenail (the smaller nail next to my big toe), because I get a blister under the nail.
