The pic I have of the cut out, archway nook is from this weird angle. It's on the mini wall that separates the kitchen from the living room. There's a chandelier now where that bronze fixture is in the pic.
My cat jumps up there and we play peek-a-boo so if you have pets, no. Even without pets I'd lean toward no. There should be plenty of vertical spaces that you can put stuff on.
I would go with a nice vase and maybe some flowers for now, but would consider looking for a statement piece that I wanted to display. I think it would be cool to have a nice piece of art in a space like that.

What about a hanging plant? I have cats, so vases on ledges don't work for me, but I could see a hanging plant there, and then you could still use the passthrough for its intended purpose.

This is kind of an awkward angle. What's behind it in the other room? It's such a gorgeous arch and it looks like there is a lot of light, so I wouldn't put anything large or dramatic in that space. It's beautiful on its own.
