I had been contracting pretty steadily for a couple days but they were never hard enough to make serious progress (which is pretty much exactly what I did with Ethan). I had a regular appointment on Tuesday and was just over 3 cm. My doctor said that once I made it to 4, she would break my water to jumpstart the process (again what we did with Ethan).
I woke up Wednesday with contractions 7ish minutes apart and went to work. By 1:00, they were 4.5 min apart and still regular but not hard, but I decided to go in since my doctor was on call at the hospital that day, and I wanted her if possible. She checked me, and I had made it to 4, so I called my husband and all the grandparents and waited. The doctor got tied up in some other births and was finally able to break my water around 5:30. We had family and Ethan in the room for a few hours just hanging out and letting the contractions progress. They were starting to get more painful but nothing that kept me from talking and being with everybody. At about 8:15, they started getting way more intense so we asked everybody to go to the waiting room. My MIL was going to take Ethan home at 9:00 and just bring him back to meet her in the morning. The nurse checked me at 8:30, and I was around 5.5, so I settled in to try to manage the pain for what I thought was going to be a long night.
Then, things went CRAZY. They were suddenly 90 seconds long and right on top of each other. After about 10-15 minutes, I started to question if I was going to be able to do it without any medication. Then, I had a 90 second contraction that was immediately followed by the most intense pain. It felt like someone had ended the contraction by putting a crossbar or knife in me and just twisting it. I can't even describe it, but MH said my face was scary. I almost came out of the bed trying to hit the call button so fast. The nurse came in and I panted at her to check me because I felt like I needed to push already and if I still had hours left I was going to need an epidural. She checked and the baby was already crowning. She called for the doc and cart and all the necessary stuff, and ten minutes later (after an embarrassing amount of screaming and whining on my part) we had a screaming outside baby.
So, we went from 5.5 to ready to push in less than 20 minutes and then had a baby after about ten minutes of pushing.
It was brutal. There is no other word for it, but she's here and perfect and was absolutely worth it.
