How self made are you when you start out purportedly "making" yourself by throwing SIX MILLION extra dollars you have laying around not doing any old thing at a company for kicks? And where you use organized paparazzi-documented trips to the playground to develop the image your company trades on as "natural glamour mom," pictures they only are willing to take because you were ALREADY FAMOUS?
Good for her and her successful borderline fear mongering, but come on.
Don't forget the marketing to other celebrity moms, their discussion of it in public, and just how far hollywood moms can sell shit and make products famous because of it.
I was really annoyed with her company when I ordered a free trial pack of diapers/lotion and was instantly signed up for one of her diaper and lotion 'bundles.' Which is eighty fucking dollars a month. I had to call in to cancel, waited on the phone for 20 minutes, and was then met with a woman who would not stop trying to convince me to keep the bundle. I finally said, "Look. My husband just lost his job. It's not in my budget. I need it off of my account." She instantly went cold and said, "Fine, I'll take it off."
Not impressed. And yeah. She was rich before she started the company. It's not that inspiring of a story.
I dislike Jessica Alba like whoa. And self made? Bitch, please. Taking your Dark Angel/Blue Crush money and all of the Hollywood connections that come with it and then selling your shit to other wealthy self absorbed moms before it trickles down to the general public (while continuing to help fuel the mommy wars btw) is not what I would consider self made.
I mean yay, good for her, she's done some with herself considering she started out as a low talent commodity in an industry that doesn't have a lot of good roles for even good actresses. It's great that she's running her own business. Carry on.
But she's about as self made at Jessica Simpson and Simpson's shoes are prettier and less pretentious than this "honest" bullshit.
I will, however, give her props on how cute those damned diapers are. If they weren't so much more expensive than regular diapers, I would totes buy some.
My name is summer and I approve of this message.
And HOW on Earth did you not mention Honey?? Because I haven't seen acting that bad since.
but she was so hot in Honey. I used to have a girl crush on her and then she got too skinny.
Please elaborate? Did I miss something in the article (that I kinda skimmed)?
Honest Toddler is a blog/twitter/FB etc account (not sure if you follow it). Anyway, its The Honest Toddler. It's hilarious.
Alba tried to prevent the blog from being the Honest Toddler because she thought it was an intrusion into her brand name (I think the blog was before her company but could be wrong). Like, her lawyers were sending cease and desist letters, describing her as "emmy nominated actress jessica alba." I assume Alba finally backed down but it really left a bad taste in my mouth regarding her company.
The Honest Toddler was around before Alba's company, as was Honest Tea.
Interesting how Alba went after only the mommy blogger and not Coca-Cola, Inc.
Alba first tried to shop around the problem but grew irritated trying to find natural and eco-friendly products that weren’t either extortionate
This is pretty rich coming from someone who charges nearly $2 per diaper.
Yeah, she said a couple times in that article that her stuff is reasonably priced. Maybe if you're worth $100M it's affordable, but not for me. Let's see: $14 for 3oz of sunscreen; $30 for a can of formula; $5 for a pack of 72 wipes (OMG); $6 for a bottle of hand soap (OMG x2).
Listen, she's as self-made as any starlet who isn't related to someone else who is famous. The 1-2 movies she does a year for like 2 weeks at a time? If she wasn't so busy running her company, I really can't guarantee she'd be getting much more work than that, anyway, at the ripe old age of 35. So kudos for figuring out how to age gracefully out of Hollywood and be in control of her own business brand.
488 baby wipes from Pampers will cost you $10.99 from Amazon.
288 Honest Company baby wipes costs $18.99 via their website. (And $32.99 on Amazon for reasons I can't fathom.)
Like, look -- I wouldn't mind being more environmentally conscious. But I am not making a choice between environmentally-friendly diapers and college.
The Costco ones are made in a zero carbon facility, the "Tencel" processes is optimized to use less water and energy to make than other wipes, and they removed a few preservatives recently that were concerns for some environmental groups, so they are pretty darn good environmentally speaking. Oh and did I mention that they are $20 at Costco for 900 wipes... that's $0.02/wipe.
Compared to Honest, which is almost $0.07/wipe, that's a deal and even if you bought the Kirkland/Costco ones on Amazon, it's still $26/900 wipes and so it's $0.03/wipe.

Right but nobody is calling Jennifer Aniston or Jennifer Lawrence "self-made millionaires."
They make it seem like she made millions building her business up from scratch but she started with millions from her first career and then leveraged her first career to make millions from her second.

Exactly this. And it so happened that she was having children and peddling these products while her celebrity and wealthy friends were doing the same.
It's a great business and I'm glad it's going well for her. But she's about as self made as Jessica Simpson.
I know I have a hate boner for Jessica Alba but I really don't see what she'd done as anything different than most celebrity women manage to do at some point. Make your upfront money doing x and when x dries up, parlay it into y. Fashion (Jessica Simpson), skincare (Cindy Crawford), makeup (the Olsen Twins), etc. Jessica Alba just went baby with it.

I don't know why I have a hate boner for her either, but I do. She just irks me to no end.
