Our actual city has a pretty low median income, although we live in the most expensive zip code in the city. With H's salary alone we are are out of middle class. I have always posited that we are at least upper middle class if not upper class based on salary. We have been very fortunate in life, and I know its because we were both born into privilege.
Where you are you people seeing things like "upper middle"?
I think people are just saying that. I assumed they were saying it becuase they were out of middle class, but maybe not. You know, no one likes to admit that they are anything but middle class.
Based on their calculator and the charts, we are upper middle for Toronto. Doesn't seem like it sometimes. I mean, I price match at Walmart.......
Do you have the Flipp app? I just recently started using it to price match. I'm saving like $3 per week! Haha.
H has actually banned me from looking at the flyers. I end up buying more because I see tons of deals and am all " ooh better stock up on peanut butter! " and I end up buying 10.
Not even close, but it's because I live in Philadelphia and the mean income is very low. If I move a mile into Montgomery County, I'm lower middle class.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
So the test listed at the bottom of the article only takes I to account your debts and assets which is interesting. It said that my family is lower middle category due to our mortgage and debt but if I went on MM and said I was middle class, people would be calling me a complainer or sending me away.
ETA. So cost of living does matter? Daycare costs do matter?

But you have additional debt from living beyond your means. Even if you rolled that into your mortgage (against the advice of MM), you still have an income that puts you above middle class.

We were middle in DC, I think (especially after H got laid off). H's new job came with a raise and I got a promotion right before we moved. So now we are BALLER. This is confirmed by the fact that I'm currently looking out my window, watching the sun shine on Lake Michigan while I drink my locally roasted artisanal coffee.

Upper by a hair. If I subtract daycare and my loan payments from our gross income we are solidly middle
I need everyone in this thread to stop with this. You are whatever class you are regardless of what you pay in student loans, daycare, college, your car payments, etc.
And household income, yes so don't come crying to me that you're really poorer than this article says, guys, because you don't make enough by yourself to be in that higher income level.
Stop.it.
Please and thank you.
I'm just waiting for someone to tell me they aren't really upper class because they don't count their trust fund, investments, or their vacation home in the Cayman's.
We are very solidly in the center of middle class for our area and I feel middle class. We have enough to pay all our bills and occasionally buy fun stuff plus we own a home and two cars. If only our student loans weren't almost as much as our mortgage....
