I'm only laughing because you are reacting just how I would. I get freaked over the most explainable things if I don't have a proven explanation.
We had been in our new house about three days, and I was up pumping around 1 am and the doorbell rang twice. I was CONVINCED we had a peeping Tom or something and told DH we made a mistake and we needed to move. I was awake all night freaking out. The next morning, we realized out doorbell wires were faulty. Lol
Okay so I'm not alone! One of H's coworkers is in a neighborhood a few miles South of here and posted in Facebook that he heard/felt a boom like something shook the side of his house. Said all his neighbors were outside talking about it. Whatever it was must have been closer to there. I didn't really hear anything, just felt it. I didn't see any of our neighbors outside.
They are totally going in the sink hole. You are safe.

Once a gas tanker truck exploded about a mile from my house and the shock wave was enough that it sounded like someone hit my front siding with a baseball bat and all the windows rattled in the front. It was really weird.
"Why would you ruin perfectly good peanuts by adding candy corn? That's like saying hey, I have these awesome nachos, guess I better add some dryer lint." - Nonny
We had this happen. It was a meth lab a mile away blowing up. Luckily no one was injured.
This would have been my guess, too, because it is the most likely scenario in the part of the Midwest where I grew up!
That's the funny thing - it was very shocking on our small rural/suburban community. Everyone assumed it was the gas line to the barn that went until the drug squad came in en masse and started questioning all the neighbours. They were trying to track down the guy who had rented from the farmer and who had run off after the explosion.
You've got to love small towns - news travels fast!
I don't like your update Tamb! I want to know what the hell it was now! Stuff like that drives in insane. I may have stayed up all night a couple years ago because I was convinced someone was in our backyard and/or breaking into the neighbours shed. Nope. It was a stray cat.
