I forgot Pataki was running, too. I'd consider him.
It's going to be ironic when people start putting down Rubio for his lack of money management. You can't complain when the GOP nominates someone in 2012 (Romney) who obviously has done better financially than everybody else, then complain in 2016 if it nominates more of the "common man."
There's already a NYT story about Marco Rubio and his wife's 17 traffic infractions. Maybe a Rubio-Noem ticket would be appropriate? (heh---Roem's a little known female rep from one of the Dakotas who had all kinds of issues with speeding.)
So my dad helped us move last weekend. And he was reading the news and saw that Pataki announced. He said something like, "George Pataki is running for president. What a joke!"
Now, my dad is a super conservative lives-in-the-boonies Texan. (We all remember the mule incident, right?) Every now and then, I peek at his Facebook page, and it's all crazy Obama-hates-America type stuff.
So I'm thinking, "Really? Pataki running is a joke, but you are from the state that elected Ted Cruz? And I'd be dollars to donuts that you voted for him!"
But I kept my mouth shut because he helped us drive all our stuff halfway across the country.
I know Pataki has been out of the public eye for a long time, but I was baffled as to how his running is a joke. He strikes me as one of the more serious candidates!
The little I know about Pataki makes me believe he will never get far because he won't be conservative enough for most of the R's. Last election I really like Jon Huntsman but look how far he got.
Well, he was governor of NY. You don't really get anything done as governor of New York if you try to run things like Mike Huckabee. So I can totally believe that.
I think this is clearly a problem with the way the primary system plays to the extremes. Watching Romney trying to run to the right in the primary despite a fairly centrist record (health care reform what what?) and then run back to the center was kind of exhausting.

Even that story is ridiculous. 17 since 1997. And 10 were dismissed. How is this even a story? 1 ticket a year (if you count the dismissed ones), and only 4 of th em are his. So really, his wife is a bad driver. Who the fuck cares?

Is that really a story that's out there? If so, seriously? Okay, she's a shitty driver. Maybe in that case we should make her FLOTUS since then she won't drive...

This may fall in your IDGAF category but I'm an independent who voted republican in the last presidential election and I cannot identify a single republican I am comfortable getting behind. I haven't really considered Jeb a real candidate so I'd have to look more closely at him. I highly respect Bush Sr.

Yup. New York Times.
This is the paper that brought us "Jeb Bush Is Kind of a Fatty" so I wish I could say I'm surprised.
I plan to vote in the GOP primary. At this point, the only one that doesn't nauseate me is Bush, and on some level the absurdity of Bush v. Clinton 2.0 is what thrills me the most about 2016. YEAH BUSH.
I suppose depending on how things shake out, I'd consider voting for the R in the general, but I'm also open to voting for the D or an Independent. I'd say the latter two are more likely at this point, but who knows.
FWIW, my mom who is a diehard R likes Kasich and Walker and got mad at me when I said that I think the Rs will be massacred in 2016, which I do think is going to happen. Side note, I think this is another issue with our board... the Rs are basically impossible to defend at this point. So I have conservative viewpoints and identify (in theory) with certain R policies more, but they also have no credibility with me at this point. It's hard to debate - for me at least - because I don't agree with most things coming out of the R party. I mean I can think things all I want, but it's virtually meaningless since I don't see the R party or any R for that matter getting on board with me right now. I think it's going to take a massacre in 2016, and even then, who knows if they will wake up. I'm not holding my breath, but it does frustrate me because I've seen what happens when one party dominates and has a super majority. I don't like it. I think we are all best served by compromise and working together.
As a con, do you hope that the Republican party will split? I don't really want to say that the social cons go to another party because I know that many Rs have some socially conservative views. But do you hope there is some kind of split? I don't really see Tea Partiers going anywhere.
I think if the Rs stop pandering to the social cons they may draw more moderates or people who lean Libertarian. Idk.
But a lot of my ideal depends on people actually voting. Because until that happens the social cons are the loudest and get a lot of attention and I think it's a difficult sell to not pander to them until turnout changes or they finally realize it's a shrinking group of people.
My experience with him is woefully out of date (he was my Senator at one time and I interacted with him for my job) but I found him to be pragmatic and truly interested in policy and governance. I liked him. Then McCain happened...
The problem with Fiorina is that she hasn't run for office before, and didn't she have some business setback? If you want someone who's run a business, you at least want it to have been run successfully.
I'm not sure she could mount an effective organization. I am reading her memoir to find out more about her, but I doubt I will vote for her because a) lack of policy experience and b) the media will treat any female GOP candidate as a combination of Sarah Palin and Leni Riefenstahl. That's why I am a little relieved that Martinez probably isn't making the run because I don't want that for her.
I don't know the setback you are referring to but I would guess the vast majority of business people who make it to her level have had at least one major setback.

She championed a huge merger that required laying off 30,000 employees, which alone could be shrugged off as a casualty of business, but the company's stock lost half its value in the 3 years following. The board made her resign. There's some debate that the merger was good in the long run, but the whole situation is discomforting. I realize success requires risk-taking, but I don't know that she has a great success to balance against her great flop, ya know?
I don't know who I would vote for yet. I think there will be other candidates so I'm waiting to decide. Of the current crop... Obviously Lincoln Chafee because he couldn't be more right about the metric system. After him, Bush I guess. I want to give up on America for a Bush v Clinton race. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it's uninspiring. Silver lining - it would be nice to have an election where both sides realized their candidate sucked instead of one where both sides pretended their guy/gal was America's savior. ETA: Id consider others like Rubio, Kasich, Pataki ... I don't know that much about them yet, TBH.
He's from my hometown and my dad was on the school board when he was mayor of the town. We knew him decently well and he's an incredibly smart and kind person. His wife is also fabulous.
I want to learn more about Pataki - he seems moderate. The only other candidate at this time I would consider is Jeb Bush.
He's moderate in today's Republican Party, but boring as hell. He was literally elected governor in 1994 because he said he would re authorize the death penalty in NY. Which he did, but only 5 people are on death row and now there's a moratorium on it.
He was neither great nor incompetent. I think he and Giuliani worked together fine. But when Pataki was done, I really thought he was retired. I don't think anyone longs for the days of Pataki.
Practically speaking, NY is, was, and has always been doing okay, but is known for relatively heavy regulation and higher taxes, which won't win him many followers.
I will vote in the primary but I really don't know who for. I have NO idea who I will vote for in the general. Right now for Rs, it seems like shitty option after shitty option and I'm not a "who is the least shitty" kind of voter, so I might be going 3rd party again. Sorry this is totally unhelpful and not what you were asking.
Oh, I got Pataki as the closest match on a survey but I don't know ANYTHING about him so I need to learn more.

Nah, that's cool.
Mostly I didn't want a bunch of people who I know will vote for Hillary (or a third party MORE liberal candidate) in the general coming in and saying, "Oh, Jeb Bush scares me the least!" I mean, great, awesome, that tells me nothing about the pulse of the conservatives on here.

Ooo--do you have a link to the survey?
I don't remember what it was but I know it was posted on here recently!
If I was forced to vote for a Republican it would probably be Rand Paul because at least we agree on the governments constant violation of the 4th amendment ;-)
