According to the article, he did everything right when the police approached him about the theft. He was cooperative and offered himself up for a search. And look what happened. To anyone who might be wondering why black men run from the police if they aren't doing anything wrong and have nothing to hide, THIS is why. The disparity between the way this teenager was treated by the criminal justice system and the way Josh Duggar has been treated is really hitting me hard right now.

This made me cry. Our system is broken - it's obvious that it is, since we can't have justice and compassion for kids that may need mental support and have made a bad decision?!?!
ETA: I changed my response after reading the New Yorker's article. I am so, so sick that thousands of kids in our "justice" system are having their lives destroyed.
I truly do not understand how this happened. I don't understand how it took 3 years to get a misdemeanor to trial (where were his lawyers?). I cannot wrap my head around how he could have been abused, well really tortured, in jail. I just can't. I do not doubt he was, I just don't understand how NO ONE was able to get it to stop. This is heartbreaking. I need to find more info on this because I just don't get how it takes that long to get a misdemeanor to trial. I get continuances, etc., but...I just don't get it.

A friend posted about this on fb this morning. I was not familiar with this case before his post, but holy shit how do things like this happen? So unbelievably tragic.
My heart hurts. It really, truly hurts. And I haven't even read the articles yet, just the first page of this thread. I'm not sure I can read the articles. That poor, poor kid.
ETA: OMG connie0000 Really? WTF? And now I will try to read the NYT article because I need to know what is happening here.

Disgusting. We aren't some shining city on a hill. We aren't shit. We need to fix our own house before we start acting like we are some moral authority.
