"Yo heckler, I'm really happy for you. Imma let you finish but Wisconsin has one of the best hecklers of all time. One of the best hecklers of all time!"
I don't think he had to answer the question when it was asked. I think he could have said, "Ma'am, I appreciate your concern, there's a lot of misinformation out there. If you'll let me continue talking, you might find that I have some information about that topic that is useful to you." Or something like that.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
And then the heckler would be all like "thank you so much Mr. Ryan for your thoughtful response. I will stop interrupting your speech now, and will look into the resources you have been so kind as to provide"
actually, that's an exchange that probably happens dozens of times a day on the campaign trail. somebody shouts something from the crowd, the candidate says something that acknowledges but doesn't answer it, and moves on.
happens.all.the.time.
this was notable because it departed from the ordinary campaigner method for dealing with (you call 'em) hecklers / (I call 'em) audience participants.
but this was a speech, right? I have never been to a political speech so I don't know, is there usually a Q&A portion at the end? (someone suggested that he tell her to wait until the end to ask questions.) I get that during town halls that is what happens (and in such a setting, I would find her, even with the heckling, less rude and his reaction more rude) - but I thought this was just a speech.
that said - meh. I think his response was kind of eyeroll-worthy, but I think heckling is rude too - even in a state fair setting. I think the setting just means he should have been more prepared for call outs etc.

I didn't listen to clip, so I can't comment on the heckling.
What struck me about the woman's letter was how she basically admits her generation was silent and watched shit get bad and didn't say/do anything. The only reason she's saying anything now is because she thinks it's going to effect her precious medicare.
And...it is the bad the only thing I like about Ryan is that he is a fellow P90X grad?

I've been to a lot of rallies/speeches and never once did they have a Q&A at the end. Some of the smaller ones have an extended period for meeting & greeting at the end, so I suppose one could ask a question at that time. But there's a rush of people trying to shake hands, so it's still not the greatest opportunity to ask a complex question. She should go to an event specifically geared toward answering questions from individuals. I plan on doing that actually, or submitting questions to a debate (hoping I get lucky enough to have my Q picked!).
That said I think hecklers are just part of the American campaign trail. They're not unique. They're rude, but I don't care b/c it's so common. I'll admit I even kind of like it. I just imagine it's someone having a fit of the vapors and being unable to control themselves any longer. I think it's funny when the crowd gets involved back. At a Romney rally during the 08 primaries some local dude did a stump speech for McCain. Yes, at a Romney rally. it was very odd. You could have heard a pin drop, it was so quiet. People were all like WTF is this guy doing talking about McCain? Then out of nowhere this seasoned citizen in the back screams out at the top of his lungs, "WHAT ABOUT THE TAX CUTS?" And I about died laughing. I'm sure you all were dying to know that story.

This sort of sounds like a highbrow South Park episode.
