I am following him on fb. I still think he is an idiot and is mangling his body, but the pictures they post look like fun. Plus his wingmen are hilarious.

Honestly I don't really understand all the hate. I think it's incredible and inspiring. It's no more idiotic than any of the other crazy shit people do like those desert ultras or running from Georgia to Maine in a month and a half. whi cares if he has no toenails left? I think it's intense to explore the upper limits of what a body can do physically and what the mind can overcome mentally. the real idiots are the millions of people who eat garbage all day and neglect their bodies.

I haven't been following this, other than the posts on this board. Is there a lot of hate around this? I'm assuming just the regular "OMG! What an idiot! He's ruining his body!" ?
To which I respond
ETA: After reading, I see that those very things have been said in this thread. Never mind. LOL

Yes, I will totally agree with this.
I honestly do not care about the status of his toenails, but it has inspired me to not look at facebook during my lunch (which I did the day of the toenail pic)
I was going to go out and do the 5k with him when he makes it to MN, but it's too far out for me, so that sucks.

Even more than the fact that no one should care about his toenails, no one needs to SEE his toenails, or lack thereof! LOL I assume his feet are tragic. I don't need proof.
Yeah, the toenail pic was gnarly, but you can assume that every endurance athlete is wondering about how his feet look. I think it's awesome.
Also, being in the middle of #41 pretty much squashes the hate. His kids posting on his behalf are so cute - I love that (his family was one of the talking points from the nay-sayers).

I was one of the ones that said he was stupid and idiotic. Now I am truly in awe of him. Having done 1 IM, I can't fathom doing one every day for 50 days, let alone one in every state. It is amazing to see him complete each one. The toenail pic was nasty, but I was kind of curious what his feet look like.
I can honestly say that until this thread, it never occurred to me to want to see his feet. Now I am dangerously curious, but I'm not doing that to myself! LOL
Does anyone remember that picture that Kara Goucher posted after a track session? Her feet were wrapped in bandages & the bandages were soaked in blood. How does that happen? It seriously looked like she ran her feet off.
Anyway, I really hope he can hang on. This is amazing.

Yeah, there's one way to silence your critics and he is doing it. I still think he's crazy, but this is just amazing.

I remember seeing her feet after one if her major races - maybe NYC or the Olympics and was really shocked at how mangled they were
I have to say, I don't think it makes one a hater to acknowledge that he's doing something dangerous. Not just like, oh running will ruin your knees. Actually dangerous.
But I still think it's awesome that he's succeeding! I hope he makes it through safely. I just don't think I could ever in good conscience encourage someone to do it.

This is all a solid point. Well said runaways. jene's point about all the stuff his doctors are doing to him makes me think again about the mega-$$$ involved. I think it could be put to better use, but then many things people do with lots money could be put to better use. Each to their own. I hope it works out for him, and he's made it way further than I would have ever imagined.

Fair point. "I wouldn't medically recommend it", is certainly very different than, "This guy is an idiot, his goal is stupid, and I hope he fails."
This board obviously skews a bit differently than the general public. We're always going to think an incredible fitness achievement is bad ass, even if it seems to be a bit crazy or ill advised.

He's there today! I fly in tonight and I was contemplating moving my flight up a day, but you know, then I got a boot so I didn't. But that would've been kind of fun!

Do you come up often? We should do a GTG sometime!
Damn it! I went to see if I could find this for you (I couldn't) and I ran across a picture of his feet! LOL They actually don't look quite as bad as I was imagining.

Not really. I had this trip (which is for my dad's big milestone birthday) and the TC Marathon trip planned, but that's about it. BUT, someday I'll do the TC Marathon and we'll do a GTG when that happens, damnit!

Thanks for taking one for the team.
This was the most recent Dr. report
James had started to get the belly distention back since I had seen him in SC??, so we worked on restructuring his nutrition a little bit. We upped his frequency of protein intake and made sure he always takes a broad spectrum digestive enzyme with every large protein dose, to help his body assimilate the proteins. We also adjusted his omega 3 intake, branched chain amino acids (BCAA), adrenal support and other natural supplements. James' right psoas had started to shut down on him again??, so we used cold laser to re-activate the muscle. His marathon was nearly "pain free" (by his standards)??, but he was having major toe pain again from blisters and fungus/moisture challenges??. We used the violet and red cold lasers to kill the fungus and stimulate the wounds to heal. We, my assistant Brittany Chatwin and I, performed a lot of ART, laser acupuncture and some other myofascial techniques. Upon finishing his 140.6, it was visibly obvious that his endurance has continued to get stronger... He showed very little effort to get air in his lungs?, almost as if he had just finished a casual walk along the beach.
Saturday #36 in NY:
The morning found James' psoas was still firing from fixing it the night before?, all the other lower and upper extremity muscles were also firing properly??. Despite doing over 4,000ft of elevation climbing on the bike in two consecutive days (Vermont and now NY), James reported he was holding up well and feeling really good??. The trigger points in his right shoulder were starting to make themselves known a bit more again, but overall holding up?. He reported at the end of the 140.6 that his feet/toes were feeling noticeably better?, the laser therapy was working fast! Upon testing the hip flexors I found the rectus femoris on both hips was shutting down (likely a result of the elevation climbing and extra pace on the bike)??, but nothing the laser and some ART didn't quickly fix??. James finished NY the earliest of any of his previous 35 Ironmans.
Sunday #37 in PA:
James got the best night of sleep so far on the trip??. We found all of James' muscles were firing properly and stayed that way??. He recorded a super fast swim time and had some extra time to spare for a full work over before the run (muscle testing, adjustments, trigger point therapy, kinesiology taping, etc)??. He lad developed a large knot in his left lower latisimus Doris and quadratus lumborum, so, we beat it out of him?. James performed well on the bike and run, again finishing around 10pm... His two earliest days in a row?. I had the pleasure of running the last 11 miles with him and am pretty sure my feet weighed an extra 20 pounds more than his, based on the amount of pep in our steps. James' body continues to get stronger, both cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance wise?. After 140.6 was wrapped up, Me, Sunny and James got the opportunity to fly in a 6 seater jet, to get him from PA to OH so he could have another improved night of sleep??. Can't wait to see how he does over the next couple days!... until Friday the 17th in MN, God speed!!
Yeah, after reading that I'm digging in my heels on thinking that this is a terrible idea. Abd distension plus muscles "shutting down"? This guy's body is literally eating itself. No.
