It is heartbreaking. I don't understand this level of blind hatred and I am incensed that the media will simply write him of as someone who has mental health issues.
This coupled with a quote from CNN are making me weepy today. They were interviewing a member of the church, and he said, "I can't even be myself in church. I can't even be myself in CHURCH."

Fuck. I should have waited to read this until after work.
cleo29 Me too. I swear, if I hear or see another comment about how that fucking asshole "must be mentally ill" to somehow excuse what he's done, so the fact this was pure hatred and was absolutely racism at its worst can once again be glossed over, I'm going to lose my shit. No such thing as racism my ass. I can guaran-fucking-tee that if the shooter had been black in a predominantly white church, there wouldn't be anyone excusing his actions with the 'oh, he's mentally ill' excuse. No, I'm sure the word thug (or worse) would be used much more frequently to describe what happened if the situation was reversed.
I made the mistake of reading the comments on an update on FB. Some asshole seriously said "why are they playing the race card? WHAT IF HE JUST HATED CATHOLICS?" He then proceeded to blame the church, and then say the church was at fault because they didn't allow white people inside so the people of the CHURCH were the racists. Holy shit.
I am also having a difficult time reading / listening to this, and other similar stories as of late. Yet at the same time, I feel like I owe it to the victims to listen.
Thank you for posting this. I want to put my energy today into remembering those good people and their lives rather than giving that sick asshole any of my time or attention. I have plenty outrage for tomorrow.
I'll ditto sonrisa. Thank you for posting this. These nine people, as well as their families (home and church) deserve our thoughts, prayers and remembrance today.

Did you point out to the idiot that it isn't even a Catholic church? Because if you are going to be an ignorant racist fucker like the shooter at least know your target. (apparently, keeping my outrage for tomorrow isn't working well for me.)

not that it even matters, but I'm pretty sure he was with the people in the sanctuary of the church for like, an hour, before he opened fire on them. so they obviously let him in. that guy is not only a dumb a-hole, but he's flat out wrong.
kath16 That was pointed out to him in one reply. Someone also C&P'd the definition of epithet, and pointed out it was reported he was shouting racial epithets during the attack. How that idiot can still resolve to believe that it wasn't an attack fueled by ignorance, racism, and pure hatred - AND STILL BLAME THE CHURCH - I cannot begin to understand.
I don't understand why this happens here so frequently. It's really frightening that even a church isn't sacred enough to be safe from this type of gun violenceRACISM.
Although I do think gun violence needs to be a part of the discussion, this is what this is really about right here.
