and our parents are slowly turning into these old people?
WELL
I will probably DD this for obvious reasons, but...
My mom left for Greece saturday. Alone. WITH TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CASH IN HER CARRY ON. I tried and tried to explain why it was infuckingsane, but she said she would keep it under her feet in the plane. Okay. Then she thought that maybe she should put it in her underwear.
She survived the plane, spoke to my dad upon arrival. But um, she is at risk of getting murdered for it every fucking day, no?
Most of it (maybe 7-8K) is my yiayia's life insurance $$ that is to be distributed amongst my mom's siblings in Greece. But it's not like she saw them all on day 1 and got rid of it. She still has to travel all over the place to visit her siblings and then give them $$.
Why why why why why?
Ugh.
Ok your turn, lol. What crazy shit do your parents do?
My mom watches DS while H and I are working. Recently, she watching a mass video on her tablet, and she was about halfway through. DS got on her lap and touched the screen, making the video start over. She didn't realize she could scroll through the video to get back to where she had left off. She was watching the whole thing again!
She told me about it when I got home, and I had to explain the scroll bar on the bottom of the screen!
My mom takes pictures of old pictures and posts them on Facebook. They are So.Fucking.Blurry you can hardly make out who is who. She is so freaking blind and refuses to go to the doctor (or any doctor). When I saw how big her ipad writing was I was told her she had to fucking go get some glasses but she absolutely refuses.
My mil...lol. she tells me every week not to buy anything from the russian lady who sells oils and natural sprays at the Farmer's Market. I never questioned her because I figured it was some kind of drama I don't care about. Anyway, she finally told me that this woman and her husband used to be chemists in Russia. She bought some sprays from her and said they made her "so sick", and now she's convinced that this woman is a spy using her oils and sprays to spread some kind of sickness to wipe us all out.

OMG. My mom absolutely refuses to go to a doctor.
She's like "But what if they tell me something is wrooooooong?"
And H, my dad, and me are like "THEN THEY FIX IT. THAT'S THE POINT."
I try to guilt her into going but even that doesn't work.

WARNING: DEPRESSING POST
My uncle was the same way. He had a giant mole on his back that he refused to get checked for two years, because one of his friends had one checked and needed surgery for it or something. It was melanoma.

(he died a couple of years later)
This is what we keep trying to tell her. If something is wrong, and you don't know and can't fix it, then what? And she pouts and says we're all picking on her. OKAY MOM.
It's even more annoying when she gets on my dad for not seeing the rheumatologist for his RA. He goes to the doctor for check ups every 3 months, but doesn't want to get on any of the drugs for his arthritis. I'm working on him and he's coming around, but at least he goes to a doctor, mom!
My mom keeps cash at her house, but has somehow forgotten where she put it. So there is $3,000 in her house somewhere.
Dh's grandma did this. We didn't know it until we were packing her up to move 2 years ago and mil found some money stashed inside something. She did not remember she had hidden money until that was found and then was all "oh yeah, I did do that. I might have hidden more too, I don't remember." We wonder how much money we may have accidentally thrown away because we didn't know it was stashed inside something.
I'm sorry Papie. Why in the world would she do that!!
My contribution-
PDQ
My mom just declared to me that life and family is not really fulfilling and she wants to go and live in a monastery that she's been volunteering with. I'm just so tired of her lack of sensitivity, tact and a parent filter. My dad told us the same thing ten years ago and now we have to go through this with my mom. We must be really disappointing children.
On the upside, she is wonderful with my baby, so I'm trying to focus on the positive but god, I'm so tired. I feel so old and I'm not even 30.
I'm praying every day that I don't burden my baby like this. I want to figure out my shit by myself. I don't want to lean on her for my happiness or fulfillment. It's a huge burden to bear.

My Dad would buy old lady mumus from the dollar store and keep them in his car incase he had to work on a car or do something that might get his clothing dirty. The crazy part is while he would be wearing his car mumu to fix something he wouldn't take it off if he had to go to the store or find a part.
papie that does sound crazy, but aren't all the banks closed in Greece today? Maybe she wouldn't have been able to get money.
Well, yes, but she is there only 2 months. It's not like she needs that much. And my grandma died a year ago, she could have wired it a long time ago rather than waiting to bring it in cash.
ETA: and honestly, the situation makes it even more unsafe. People are desperate for cash and worried about losing it all. An old greek lady coming from Canada is an easy target.

My mom and I were discussing the fact that we're gonna have to go through every.single.thing in my yiayia's house when she dies because there will be money hidden in the most random locations. My mom doesn't think there's as much as there once was, but there's so much stuff to go through and all of it needs to be checked.

Yeah, it definitely doesn't seem like a very good solution. I hope she can at least be discreet about the fact she is walking around with wads of cash.
My mom, who has VERY limited computer knowledge (I had to teach her how to close a window; she didn't know it was even called a window) wants to start a blog.
F that. I'm her "tech support" in another city so trying to guide her through closing a window (she insisted she didn't have a little X on the top corner of the screen" over the phone made me crazy.
No. I convinced her she is much too busy to maintain a blog.
My grandmother use to keep one of those giant pickle jars buried in her backyard with tens of thousands of dollars in it. She dug it up and put in the safe deposit box when she moved. It seemed a bit damp so her solution was to iron it with the iron. So crazy.

Everytime my H calls my FIL he askes what kinds of drinks we drink here in Hong Kong, or if there is anywhere to buy diapers here. He also always asks what the weather is like then after H answers he says "yeah, that's what it said when I just checked weather.com an hour ago."
My grandmother grew up in very rural Oklahoma with no electricity or water until she was a teenager. She always looks back on those days with rose colored glasses, so she loves to relive that crap. Her water main broke to her house (out in the middle of nowhere on hundreds of acres) so she just didn't have water. She would take a shower with the hose that was hooked up to her well and I don't even want to know what she did to use the bathroom. She is also a legitimate hoarder so her house is too messed up to even go fix anything. When she dies we will just have to bulldoze it and sell the land.
You would never know it though. She looks like a normal person and is very liked by other people.

EVERY TIME.
The weather theme is a big one too. Dad regularly knows what is going on outside my window much better than I do. But of course he must test me on it.
My ex-MIL borrowed about $8,000 from us. Instead of re-paying us with a check she cut a whole in a teddy bear and put the cash in it. Sewed it up and then mailed it to us!
I just moved my Mom from the house I grew up in to a retirement apartment. While I was packing up the pantry cabinet, asking whether she wanted the cinnamon, the dried fruit, etc, she piped up with "oh, do you see my jewelry container down there? It has my rings in it." My Dad's old dresser had a vitamin container full of coins.
God only knows what's squirreled away and where. Dad had dementia for a couple of years before he died, and even after moving everything Mom wanted to take along the house is still full of STUFF. I'm going to have to pour the sugar bin through a sifter, aren't I?
I told my dad I didn't have enough leave time to visit for 48 hours so he suggested I visit for "a few days" or that I send an unaccompanied minor age 5 by air to a strange place.
He also emailed me that I need to evaluate his will for legality before he sends the draft back to his lawyer and why haven't I responded yet. I am not a trusts and estates lawyer. He never sent me the draft. And then he mentioned that I need to make sure the body farm (this is an actual place that does scientific research) needs "old fat men" and to get back to him. Dude, you want to donate your body to science, YOU MAKE THE CALL.
My folks went over to my sister's house the other night. After they visited for a bit, they walked outside to leave. Dad got in his pickup, but my mom got into my BIL's pickup. And didn't seem to realize she was in the wrong vehicle, my sister had to say something. I mean, I laughed when I heard about it, but to be honest I'm a little concerned.
