I was hearing all this chattering and squawking all evening and thought it was birds. I got tired of their noise and took a flashlight and followed my ears to these 2 poor little devils down the window well! Poor little guys!
I can't save them myself, right?
Morning Update: the window well was empty just now when I checked! They made it out on the mesh roll. I WISH I COULD HAVE SET UP A CAMERA TO RECORD THEIR FURRY LITTLE TIGHTROPE- WALKING ESCAPE TO FREEDOM!! <)
pixy0stix, it's probably better stoopid husband wasn't there after all. It was a delicate operation requiring tact and silence, and he would have been clomp-clomping and clattering his way into putrescence.
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
They are quiet so I went to check. They are sleeping curled up wth each other.
pics or it didn't happen
How deep is your window well?
I'M MOT SUPPOSED TO AGITATE THEM!!!!
(5-6 feet?). I have a ladder but I had abdominal surgery and am not allowed to lift stuff AND MY FUCKING HUSBAND IS AWAY AS PER USUAL WHEN THERE IS A CRISIS FUCKER

We had a large roll of screen. I rolled it out the garage and around the house and tipped it down. They didn't much like that and went scurrying around down there but didn't spray. I have a feeling they're looking at each other like WTF IS THIS SHIT and will still be there tomorrow.
I just googled and skunks can't climb very well. But it did say they can climb chain link fences and the like, so maybe the mesh will work. Otherwise, just call animal control in the am. They'll be okay tonight.

Yeah, were you on the humane society site? Did you see this:
If the skunk cannot climb out due to the well’s depth or steepness, the Connecticut Wildlife Rehabilitators Association recommends a technique it uses that involves a plastic rectangular garbage can and smelly cheese. Place the cheese at the bottom of the can and lower it on its side with the open end facing the skunk. Once the skunk enters and begins to dine, carefully tilt the can up a bit, raising it elevator style out of the window well, then gently tip it on its side again so the skunk can amble out.
GTFO WITH THIS "JUST ELEVATOR THEIR HAPPY ASSES RIGHT UP AND OUT WITH THEIR SMELLY CHEESE!"

Nah. I had this helpful response typed out when I realized you said skunks, not racoons, so I googled "can skunks climb" - lol.
Also, I like skunk smell, although I definitely wouldn't want to be sprayed. I'd sit next to you, though! Maybe put on some extra layers and a head scarf before elevatoring them out.

We had a skunk fall in our window well and we lowered a ladder down for him. A couple hours later he was gone, so I guess he was able to climb all right. Do you have a neighbor who can help?

Well, it's midnight.
I can't stop laughing now at this business and this thread.

They might be willing to help at midnight if the alternative is skunk spray right outside.
Since the skunks are sleeping, it can probably wait until morning.
The fuck? I would be squeeeeeeing the entire time lifting that trash can. "PLEEEASE DON'T SPRAY! PLEEEEASE DON'T SPRAY!"
Right? And they are like "yeah, the previously trapped and upset skunk will just amble out and mosey on away. Ain't no thang."
it's storming now. I'm sorry, little buddies.
I've trapped a skunk in a live trap that I had set for a cat. He was fast asleep so I opened the back of the trap and ran away. I went back a couple of hours later and he was still asleep! The rescuer I was working with said that they pretty much just amble out and go on their way.
If they are babies do they need their mom to survive? Maybe lower down some water and call a wildlife center in the morning. I'm thinking they must be young to be stuck down their together.
Do you have a board to slide in there? Just don't agitate them.
Eta: they can climb up a board that is Angled down to them.
IDK about a board. ::flails arms:: I will go look. Do you really think they can climb one?
I feel so bad for them!
Oh yeah, they can climb.
One year, my family had three skunk encounters: One sprayed under my bed (I slept on the couch for two months while the floor was ripped up and my mattress and box spring sat out in the sun), one crawled up our dryer vent and sprayed in the dryer (dryer sat out in the sun for a couple of months), and one DIDN'T spray in our garage but held us hostage for some time.
