Okay so I didn't want to have to stay at my ILs for such an extended weekend but now I'm freaking out about traffic. Talk me through this.
Thursday: this is most people's "Friday" so a lot of people will flee the city this day. I assume lots of companies even have half days. Violet has therapy until 530 so we would have to cancel and leave early afternoon. The downside to this is that I'll be at my ILs house on Thursday.
Friday: everyone has off so it will be hell
Saturday: everyone has off so it will be hell. I was thinking it would be less hell than Friday, but am I crazy?
Sunday: everyone has to go home so this will be hell
Monday: the day we are planning to drive home but I don't want to stay that long. I'd much rather be home before Monday and then use my H's day off Monday as a catch up day to clean and get stuff done.
So, when would you go if you don't want to hit a ton of traffic but also want to go for the shortest possible amount of time? Everyone leaves the city for 4th of July so the traffic is intense. Staying there 4 nights (thurs fri sat sun) will kill my soul. I should also mention I'm not willing to wake up my kids early and go before like 6am or something. They will be cranky and miserable and violet doesn't nap.
I think you are screwed leaving Thursday or Friday unless you leave in the morning on Thursday.
What about leaving Saturday morning and returning Sunday night? The girls start sleeping on the ride home and you (hopefully) transfer them to their bed? How far are you traveling? Is this too short of a time period?
Emerson Kate, born 38w5d on 4/6/12 at 6:02 p.m., 5 lbs 13 oz and 18 3/4 inches. Lucas Matthew, born 39w5d on 4/11/14 at 8:20 a.m., 7 lbs 4 oz and 20 inches.
I hate this holiday traffic crap. But I'd hate being stuck with IL's for four nights more, so I'd leave early Saturday (really early-as soon as the girls are up), and return crack of dawn Monday, personally.

We were considering Saturday morning but spaghetticat made me think twice. Sunday night will be so awful I can't possibly do it. It's a 1.5- 2 hour trip that can easily be 5+ hours in mega traffic. If we left Sunday we are going to have to leave early in the day while people are still at the beach.

Saturday's are so so so awful here. I just bailed on my bff's kid's birthday party because I couldn't deal with the Saturday morning traffic and she's practically in NY.
I don't know if this Saturday would would be different since many people have Friday off, but most rentals are Saturday - Saturday so I would assume so. If it were me, I might try to leave Thursday night, after V's therapy. But that might be too late for the girls and too much inlaw time for you.

This is kind of what I'm currently thinking, except that Monday we'd have to wait until after rush hour to miss commuter traffic.
I cannot believe my life is revolving around traffic this much!!

It's rush hour at that time but I guess we could wait until 7 or so and have them sleep in the car? UGH I DO NOT WANT TO GO!
I don't know what it's like there, but Sunday traffic into the city here is awful even without a holiday. We drove home from Aspen last Sunday, and it took nearly 8 hours- twice the normal time. Just with people returning to Denver from camping, etc. I avoid Sunday traffic like the plague. You couldn't pay me to do it over a holiday weekend.

I refuse to even drive back on a normal Sunday because of the traffic so we always stay until Monday. But I really don't want to stay there for a million nights!!

I don't blame you. 8 hours in the car Sunday was well worth not staying with my ILs for another night:)

It's probably your best bet, traffic-wise, but in-law sanity is important too. I would just have a really hard time being stuck in traffic forever with a baby Ruby's age.
I can, I guess if we leave in the early afternoon a lot of people will still be at the beach? I'm starting to think that Sunday traffic will beat another night there.

Is it an option to not go at all?
This would be my #1 choice right now but it will be a big deal if we don't go. We would have to lie and say we are sick or something which I don't really want to do.
We shouldn't have agreed to this weekend because we were JUST there for an extended weekend and we are going again August 2nd weekend. They are just so intense and basically force us into agreeing.
What about leaving mid-day on Friday? I would think most people who have off on Friday are either leaving Thursday night or early Friday morning. Then people who don't have off on Friday might leave early afternoon on Friday, so leaving closer to the middle of the day might have less traffic.
Ugh, I hate beach traffic. At our old house a normal 20 minute commute home from work took close to 2 hours on Fridays because of beach traffic. We regularly left at noon at worked from home in the afternoon to avoid it. That's why I'm thinking mid-day Friday might work for you?
Eastern corridor holiday/summer traffic is the worst. It took Steve ten hours to do what should be a five hour drive this past Friday, and that wasn't even a holiday.
I'd leave late Thursday night (after 8 because traffic is still pretty rough at 7) and return first thing Sunday morning. We've usually found the worst traffic on Sunday midday because everyone thinks they'll beat the beach traffic and leaves after lunch.

Shit, I was thinking people had off on Monday for some reason. If you leave Sunday, the earlier the better.

Yes, that's a lot.
I would probably leave early as possible Friday and come home early as possible Sunday. If you go Sat morning then leave Sunday, it sounds too quick given the traffic. I'd want Monday at home to wake up to.

Sunday is supposed to be a beautiful day so maybe it will Be okay to drive that day while everyone stays at the beach and tries to enjoy their day as long as possible,
It's really nice!! For some reason I dislike that whole area but I'm not really someone who wants to live near the shore full time. The town of red bank is super cute and has great restaurants!
