It won't be rush hour since everyone has off and I assume most people wouldn't leave that early.
We're leaving around then to head to Albany which isn't the same but can still suck.
I didn't want to have to wake the girls up but I guess we could do this. They sleep until 7/730. Last time we visited ruby was SO cranky the entire time and I'm convinced she hates my ILs, so I'm trying not to mess with her too much.

Go Thursday early afternoon and come back early Sunday morning? I feel like when people go home they leave a bit later so traffic might not get horrible Sunday until late morning?
Also if you wake them up early on the way home at least they'd be cranky at home instead of on vacation.

Also Regina Philange I'll be in LBI NEXT YEAR (bc they're crazy and already planned!) June 25-July 2. I can PM you our house. spaghetticat how far is that from you?
Leave on Saturday and come back Monday? Or late Friday night? I would avoid Sunday at all costs. I am not familiar w ny traffic but in mi everyone goes up north summer weekends same type of thing Sunday is always a nightmare. Everyone here leaves early on Sunday to "beat traffic" and it's just bad all day.
H and I think traffic on Saturday isn't going to be what it normally is because like you said, the 4th is being observed on Friday and most people will get off early with summer hours on Thursday.
I would leave Saturday. As far as returning I'm not sure. If given the option is probably come home Monday. My gut says Sunday will be the nightmare it always is.
Everytime someone says "everyone is off Friday" a angsty fairy hulk smashes something somewhere.
I'm sorry . You should go on strike!
I've heard they are changing it from "work until 2" until "work to noon". I already have my day off request approved but I don't want to waste it on a half day. I also feel bad for my staff so it's good if I go for a little bit. We are going to plan a pot luck and they can start drinking as way as they want. It's the principle of it that irks me. It's a waste of time, people commute, etc.
Leave early Saturday, come home Saturday night? No one will be leaving Saturday night.
I will say that when we go to the shore, it is typically Labor Day afternoon, arriving early evening and no traffic as people aren't leaving my area yet and no one is headed to the beach that evening.

I'd get an early start Saturday, as soon as they wake up hurry out, then as you near your in laws stop for an extremely long lunch and claim traffic was atrocious

1.5-2 hours. It's really like 1 hour 15 min in the zombie apocalypse but it never takes us less than 1.5, and 2 happens often. So with major traffic it could easily be 4 or 5 hours or more. I mean sometimes it takes hours to get out of New York City. I HATE PEOPLE.

In case anyone cares, we have decided on the worst possible combo, leave Saturday morning and come home Sunday morning. I'm really excited to have Friday at home as a family day though! Now we need to think of something to do.
