Pie!
Would that make any kind of sense within the context of the event? (I can't quite remember what said the 5k was in conjunction with).
Even if doesn't, so what? I hear about theses magical races that give out pies as prizes. I've yet to find a race like this for myself. I want to win a pie.
I agree with the top 3 finishers, male and female, getting awards.
Most of the smaller local races I do give out gift certificates that are donated from local stores. That is cool too. Honestly if I'm top 3 in a race I don't expect much. I mean in a bigger, more competitive race, sure (cash , but I am personally not getting top 3 in those. Ask around and see what you can get donated.

We have a club race where the cost is a pie and the winner gets first dibs, second next, and so on. EVERYONE GETS A PIE.
I agree- ask around about what you can get donated. Especially with newer businesses (bakeries, breweries, running store gift cards, etc.) I've never been in the running for an award, but if it was something I could eat or drink I would love it!

gt7301b and I ran one on Valentine's Day that gave out cherry pies for age group awards. Even thought it was cheap and I don't even like cherry pie, I still loved it and my H thought it was pretty cool.
I run a Turkey Trot every year and the first 2000 finishers win a pumpkin pie - last year Whole Foods donated all the pies. If you don't want your pie, your can donate it to a local food pantry right there at the race. DH loves Pumpkin Pie so he is excited for me to run every year:)
Prizes: GC to local LRS, brewery, or winery. I ran a race where the prizes were growler fills at a local brewery and cream puffs at a local german restaurant. I always love food or booze as prizes:)

I actually froze one of our pies and just defrosted it to make room for fresh veggies I'm freezing. It wasn't that bad even frozen
Agree on top three male and female finishers. I love any sort of prize! My last 5K was very small (350?) and they had a ton of raffles at the end. It was the local Firefighters so they had a ton of community support, but it made it so fun.
Here are some ideas of the donations -
Giftcards (from small $5 to larger $20) to places like Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, Hooters (yes...), a Burrito place, Restaurants, local running store Giftbaskets (wine and cheese, a beer one) Signed sports gear (baseball, football) Concert tickets Sporting tickets Water bottles A grill (this was not popular)
Personally, I think the waterbottles were nice and small giftcards
