Disney world is huge so they have awesome and lame. Disneyland is all that is awesome at Disney world without the lame because they have less space. They also enhance some of the awesome like Pirates of the Caribbean is longer.
Disneyland is the original park, opened in 1955. Disneyworld is what Walt originally called Project X - he wanted to create a much larger theme park since Disneyland had been such a success. There was limited land available in California which made expansion on that scale impossible but Florida had tons of cheap land available so he grabbed that up and the multiple theme parks were created in one location.

Disney World has the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. It's more spread out, and has numerous resorts, restaurants, miniature golf courses, water parks, etc. It's more of a week-long destination.
Disneyland can fit in the Magic Kingdom parking lot (literally). It also has California Adventure. It's smaller, more compact, and could feasibly be a long-weekend destination.
Disney World (the theme park portion, at least) is built over a series of underground tunnels. Disneyland is not.
Only Magic Kingdom has the tunnels. It's primarily because of the theming. For example, Cast Members who are located in Adventureland can't be seen in Tomorrowland as it disrupts the theme, so they use the tunnels to get from place to place.
"The zoo" is particularly trippy as it's where all of the fur Cast Members are free to wander about without heads on.

There are a few underground areas in DL, the kitchen that serves Blue Bayou and Club 33 is underground, but DW's tunnels are primarily a result of better planning (Walt got to do a lot he wanted to at DL but wasn't able to originally for financial reasons) and necessity because of the size of the parks.
California Adventure was a horrible mistake and can be blamed on Eisner. Originally it was slated to be Westcot, a West Coast version of Epcot but Eisner thought that a one stop tour of California would be better. Terrible miscalculation on his part.
Omg, nobody cares about the underground tunnels you guys.
What? You mean you wouldn't want to go to DW just to see the tunnels? lol
There's actually a surprising amount of guest interest in cast member areas which I don't get at all because it's boring and ugly. It would be like getting excited about alleys or the backs of buildings. Usually not really worth touring. The only good part would be if you got to see where they're keeping Walt's head on ice, but no guests will ever be allowed to see that obviously.

Significantly greater chance of getting eaten by a gator at Disneyworld.
Albeit, a smaller chance of an earthquake!
Ugh, we were at Disneyland during a small-ish earthquake. It was big enough to shut most of the park down, though, and filing out to the parking garage was a big ol' pain in the butt.
Disney World is big and overwhelming and involves going outside all day in humid, hot Florida weather.
Disneyland is just as magical with better weather. It is smaller, which I also like better.
I have been on five one week trips to Disney World in my life and never saw an ounce of rain. I spent two days at Disneyland and it rained the entire time.

No way. It always rains for like 15 minutes so you have to duck into a show. I call BS!
I've only been twice and it rained every day both times.

It rained here and there at Disneyworld when I was there this past April.
But it was glorious because it was too freaking hot for this Washingtonian. We were out walking and getting soaked and just loving it.
Most of the differences have been covered. I just wanted to second the awesomeness that is Food & Wine at Epcot. We did it last year and SOOO good.
They used to do the Food & Wine Festival here too, California Adventure side, but stopped a few years ago. I suspect that was because they were starting construction to redo many of the areas of the park, which they needed to do because California Adventure was a terrible idea. *shakes fist at Eisner*
One year we even went to a winemaker dinner, William Selyem, and it was incredible. *pours one out for F&W*

That must've sucked big time! Did they give you a free return pass?
Disneyland is far superior if you have little boys. Carsland is amazing & DS1 could spend the entire day there. He had fun at DisneyWorld, too, but we probably won't go back. Too much princess stuff, and he couldn't care less about any of them.
