Complete with caption "pour one out for your dead homies" form the CEO of Crossfit no less. Nick Jonas tweeted them. They have been bombarded with angry tweets and posts from thousands of type one diabetics and parents (including me!) They issued an "apology". Coca-Cola did not endorse this. It's an epic shitstorm.
So people are upset because he did not distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
I'm not trying to be a smartass; I'm just trying to understand why this has people so volcanically angry.
Sugar does not play any role in the development of diabetes. It's a really common misconception and the fact that a huge brand did this has people out of their old person rockers and out into the streets with pitchforks and torches blazing. Rightly so.

No role in the development of Type 1 diabetes, of course. But there is a link between sugar - sugary beverages in particular - and Type 2.
But I feel like I'm wading into something dangerous here. I understand how upsetting it must be to be told that a non-preventable condition is one's "fault," and to have to battle that misconception constantly.
My H's cousin posted this (her son has type 1). WTF were they thinking.
You know, my husband is Type 1 and he would probably like this. He hates diabetes. It's a shitty disease. He says all the time that it just kills him that there are people who get diabetes as a result of lifestyle choices, because he hates the idea of anyone living with this disease when they could have never gotten it. I tell him he should be grateful. It may sound callous, but you need an epidemic to fuel research.

The nurse who taught our nutrition class that we attended when DH got his diagnosis says that it does. She said you can basically wear out your pancreas. She said "carbs," though, not "sugar." I would love it if this weren't true!
Ah, so what they need to do is actually hire a real PR person to create positive publicity instead of letting people just be utter and complete dumbfucks? Good to know.

The owner could give zero flying fucks about what he's putting out there.

They have PR people, and they have a huge stable of lawyers (the leaders of which are together called "The Russels" - just google them if you're feeling like you need to hate someone right now). They are unabashedly libertarian, anti-corporations, anti-modern food, anti-most exercise that isn't CrossFit and most food that isn't "paleo."
They knew what they were doing when they did this. And they did it on purpose because they're dicks.
Consumption of sugar does NOT cause Type 1 or Type 2 or any type of diabetes (and yes there are more than just T1 and T2.)
Type 1 is an auto-immune disease where the body destroys the beta cells (insulin producing cells) in the pancreas. There is no cure. It is degenerative. Sugar did not cause it. Anyone at any age can develop Type 1.
Over-consumption of carbohydrates does not cause Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is caused by a whole boatload of factors including genetic pre-disposition and environmental triggers. The hallmark of T2 is insulin resistance. The pancreas is usually still producing insulin. The body's red blood cells can't use the insulin the pancreas is making. The main goal with using diet to control blood sugars is to basically not flood the body with too much carbohydrate to metabolize at one time since the red blood cells are impaired. Over time, almost all T2 diabetics will have to be on some kind of insulin sensitizing medicine or insulin. Losing weight will help make managing T2 much easier, but you will never be cured (unless you under go radical weight loss surgery. There is some thought that it can cure T2 but that's controversial.)
The misinformation about diabetes in main stream culture burns me with white hot rage. I have managed Type 2 diabetes for more than 17 years. I've learned a shitton about this disease.

One more reason to look upon CrossFit (the brand) with complete contempt and disdain.
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley

I wanna get all their phone numbers and call in the middle of the night and creepily whisper things like "taebo" and "jazzercise," laugh maniacally, and hang up.
Managing T1 diabetes is no joke, and T2 is no easier from what I understand. This ad isn't funny or witty at all.
I work really freaking hard to control my blood sugars, and hate insinuations that it should just be easy for me. Good control takes effort (especially when I am KU).
Ok. Explain to me, like I'm 5, what this is saying. I keep looking at it, and all I see is "Coca-Cola open diabetes." Which is not insulting and not, not insulting, but just nonsensical. And maybe it's because I've taken unisom(which is not really working), but I am LOST. And I want to be properly outraged.
