Kansas City is warmer. We have four seasons still, but winter is milder than the upper Midwest/east coast and summer is milder than the Deep South. It's great. We get some snow but almost everything shuts down when we do so its kind of great.

We moved from NYC to Denver & we love it. We've slowly been recruiting many of our friends to make the move too. with the right neighborhood it meets all the criteria on your list.
We traded in Seattle for Bozeman,MT and are never moving back! No traffic, hardly any crime, plenty of outdoorsy stuff to do, laid back, it's everything we wanted.

Plus youd have two MMMers to hang with.
Colorado would be awesome too!!
Ohhhhh yeah we just spent a weekend there and added Bozeman to our short list of places to settle when Dh retires from the military. It seems awesome there!

I'll second Asheville, NC. I don't live there, but my in laws have a vacation house near there, and I adore Asheville. I'm not sure how walkable it is (the downtown is awesome, but I have no idea how it is to live near there), but it meets all your other criteria :-)
Nova? I'm biased though because that's where I currently live. Loudoun county I think is a bit more affordable but great living (minus the traffic). Schools there are superb, same with fairfax county.
Both are gorgeous and offer lots of outdoor activities. Not the most LCOL, but Asheville is known for beer and Cville for wine/food. Cville is a little over an hour from Richmond (big airport). And driving distance from MEEEEE. My good friend lives there. I'd introduce you so you can be buddies. She has an 8 month old. If location were no issue I'd live there in a heartbeat.
Raleigh also fits your requirements. My H and I plan to relocate there in the next couple of years. Lots of young families, more progressive scene, a metric shit ton of jobs (for my H and I at least). Good size airport and sits in between the mountains and the beach.
