Is it really even that fun lol? The sets always look so cool and I am taken in. But the kids of course don't keep the colors separated and instead of pretty swirls it looks like mud. The molds are always too small and it is hard to get the dough out without smushing it. I am the joy killer lol.
We view it as a disposable product. I don't care if he mixes colors or it accidentally gets dropped on the floor and stepped in. It easily washes out of clothing, can be vacuumed up once it's dried, and gives me time to put on makeup or cook dinner. (We have hardwood floors, FWIW.)
We've been buying these packets more often than the plastic tubs, lately. I even keep a pack in my purse for restaurants. (Usually plays with it on a spare plate.)

I love playdoh and so do my kids. We usually don't use the machines that extrude. I don't care if it gets mixed. Around back to school time it usually goes on sale for $1 for a 4-pack, so we restock.
DS will be 2 next week and I wish we had discovered Play Doh sooner. He's never been one to sit at a table and color or do anything else for longer than a few minutes, but he will play with it for a solid half hour. I can handle the clean up of anything if it keeps him occupied for this long.
The mixing of colors used to drive me crazy! But I decided it was really not a big deal. It's fucking play doh and it's not mine. If DS wants to mix it, go to town, kid.
DS has been really into Play Doh lately from watching those stupid Youtube videos.
DD loves it. I make a batch every now and again. I like home made better because it doesn't smell. I know, I know, playdoh smell. It's great. The smell of 1000 asses.
Anyway, we use cookie cutters, toys that will leave funky imprints, etc. and not the presses. Much easier to play with and clean up.
Yes-- anything with a press is a waste. They will get clogged with hard playdough after one or 2 uses and that will be the end of them.
I set up a cookie sheet (jelly roll pan? the kind with edges) for each kid to contain the mess, and we have little plastic knives, rollers, cookie cutters that they like to use.
We make our own. My kids like to help, and you can make it quickly.
So do those need to go into a container once the package is open?
Yes, we usually have a few empties.
If we're out of the house, it gets trashed.
If it gets stepped on and covered in dog hair - trash.
Mixed with other colors - we shove it into an old container and use it again.
I only had play doh a few times as a kid, because my mom said "if the colors mix, that's it, never again, because you're ruining it". Eff if I'm going to raise my kid like that. It's basically clay - and clay isn't always intended to be reused.

My DD loves it. It took a while for me to accept the fact that the colors were going to be mixed, but I've finally made peace with it. She couldn't care less if they are mixed, so why should I? I set her up where there's no carpet and let her go to town. It sweeps up really easily once its dried.
My 3 year old loves it. I put a towel down on the floor and put her chair on top of it and let her have at it. We have a lot of brown/black play doh though.
My 4yo DD loves play doh. She only plays with it at the kitchen island so the mess is easier to deal with. She usually plays with it for a couple of hours at a time.
She has a few sets and then a lot of the generic tools - cookie cutters, rolling pins, plates and extruders.
The colours always get mixed together but it doesn't bother her so I don't care. There is always some that ends up dried out on the floor or doesn't make it back into the containers but she has used it a lot and it lasts a long time.
Try play doh mats instead of all the stamps and junk. I print them off online, laminate and she goes crazy. The kids in my prek class love them too. Less expensive, less clean up, and they're usually "edu-centered" on shapes, numbers, seasons, etc.
I hate how expensive it gets replacing the dough, so I just make it. I prefer the texture of real play doh though.
I hate play doh with the fire of a thousand suns. My kid had some in his pocket and it went through the wash and the dryer. FYI, play doh ink does not come out of clothes or the dryer when it has melted.
I hate mixing play doh, but I'm trying hard not to ruin my kids' fun with my own issues. I haven't had it out in a long time. DS2 is almost 2 & I bet he would love it!
My 4 year old is obsessed. It's why we have vinyl planking in the playroom instead of carpet now. She makes clothes for her barbies mostly or cuts out shapes.
