Well, lately the number has gotten lower since both H and I are tired of our jobs and would love an "out." But I haven't calculated what that new # is yet. Our typical retirement goal is in the $7-8M range (typing that out makes me feel like we have a loooooooooong way to go), but right now I feel like I'd be happier with simplicity and less $.
v clicky polls don't tell me who says what! Which is the fun part.
Plus you always get some clicky poll auditor on your tail: "I found the brackets were too wide." "Why did you start at 0, no one can retire at 0," Yadda yadda yadda.
I really don't know. But I should figure it out so we have something to work for. Totally off the cuff, I'm thinking $8-10 M. We have some work to do!!
$1.5M + paid off house. (Less if college is magically paid for some other way.)
You are so pragmatic that I'm curious about what your philosophy is for college....plan on setting aside enough to fully fund a private education, put aside a little to help with expenses....or something in between?
This thread is annoying and why MM isn't fun anymore.
I have no idea what our magic number is but it isn't too high -- probably $2-3 million. However, I wouldn't quit working. I love my job and my field. I would take better vacations in my time off, though.
suzubell - in all seriousness, why do you say that this thread is why MM isn't fun anymore? I didn't intend to contribute to the group in a way that wasn't interesting.
I ask because the different responses, numbers, and viewpoints have been pretty intriguing to read. Those that really love their work and don't even think about this are the coolest responses - those folks are so lucky.

The coyness and secret-ness of it all. The conversation becomes not about MM matters but rather begging people who allude to interesting information to share it. I see you posted and then pretty immediately deleted. The second half of this thread will be people lamenting that they missed it and begging to be let in the loop. It's ridiculous. This is especially true after all non-money talk was kicked off the board, thus creating MMM and the Makeup boards. If money is the only allowed topic here, not talking about it is dumb.
It's a message board. Post, don't post, but being coy about the amount of money you need to drop out of the rat race is just obnoxious.
These types of posts are definitely why I don't post over here anymore after this being my home board for 5 years.
It's a weird balance - of putting stuff out there but not wanting it to be out there forever. I was going to bed last night and thought "shit, I should delete that so I don't forget" - maybe that's too soon? I'll update to share my number in the main thread and just remember to delete after a few days.
In general, this place is really fascinating - a community where people can talk about money, which is rare IRL. There are a very few people (outside of my spouse) that discuss money with the candor you get here. I *love* that. I would never want to damage that!

This number would give us quite a bit in the market toward college today, which I feel confident would grow to enough to pay for college for as many children as we might realistically have. I think probably it would be overkill, but to quit now, we'd want overkill.
The actual plan is that once we reach our financial independence number for supporting ourselves (25x annual expenses, projected to happen when DD is in middle school or maybe a little before), we will decide what we actually want to do for college. We'll have a better idea of what college tuition is likely to be, what kind of student she will be, and will know for certain how many children we are having. When we are done saving for college as well, then I think we will actually retire. This is what I mean when I say we will save for college when we are done saving for retirement.
Our parents paid for about 75-80% of our private college educations. We'd like to do similar for our kids.

It is not remotely true that money is the only topic "allowed" here and no one who's currently a board regular kicked any of the moms or makeup-interested people off the board. I'm tired of the revisionist history.
I don't recall you making a big effort to create interesting topics if you didn't like what was on offer. Hopefully you found a board that suits you better.
It did happen and it's not revisionist. That's why there is a MMM and makeup board. Sorry it's not your view of it. I did find a board that better suits my needs, thanks. There is no need to keep trying to make interesting topics that the board police allow. It's best to just move on. The day I officially quit this place was when a semi-new poster asked a child related question and the first response was to point them, rather rudely, to MMM. I agree there has been a bit of a pendelum swing back, but that wasn't always the case.
Why do you think MM lost most of it's long-term posters?
It depends what my Roth/non-Roth 401k breakdown is and how much will be taxable, but probably $7-8 mil to retire today (both DH and I). That should allow us to fund college, travel, and enjoy life. At 60/65-ish, probably $4-5 mil...maybe.

Not for nothing, but the makeup board as it currently stands is a spinoff from CEP, not MM.

The current one is but the old one was MM Makeup and Kore was the mod.

I have no interest in rehashing yet again why MMM came into existence, especially since I'm not going to change anyone's perspective or memory of how it happened. I will say, however, that the most vocal critics of having baby posts on the board are no longer here and/or have kids themselves. Irony.
Many of us have also been very vocal about wanting the moms to participate here more and how we miss their voices. But I get that when you have kids it kind of takes over your life, especially in the first year or two, and it's the bulk of what you want/need to talk about. And then those people, that board, become your community. That's OK--sad for the rest of us, but I get it. I'm hopeful that as the kids get older maybe the boards will start to merge again.
As kadams767 pointed out, the Makeup board came from a giant CEP thread.
Who are these board police? Name names. I don't remember any sentiment of "these kinds of posts don't belong here," but my memory's not at Kore-levels.
If you don't wish to rehash then that is that. I thought that's what we were doing?
I would name names if I could remember, but v was instrumental in the split I remember but other names escape me. I had a two year old when the boards split -- I had no need to talk about babies constantly, but kids have a lot to do with finances. I spend more on daycare than any other expense, including retirement. I disliked marking posts with an @, but did it. When it went to a sub board, that was that. Like I said, it seems like the pendulum has swung back a bit, which is great, but most posters are gone by now.
No number, I want to keep working until I am physically and mentally not able to anymore.
This is where I'm at. It's been interesting and challenging to switch to consulting and I am actually enjoying being at work, more so than just sitting around most days.
Truth be told, we could probably have both retired a few years ago.

Unless by v you mean volenti (different poster), nope! I have always been very, very pro off-topic posts and have been very anti split (I think I was the most vocal about how stupid a makeup subboard is, and have been very mopey about people spending non-kid talk time on MMM). I also always thought the @ thing was stupid, stupid shit but I don't know if I ever voiced that.

See, I said I am terrible at remembering names. Sorry for mis-calling-you-out.

For DH, his work is only about income. He would happily retire with 3 million (money not property).
Me, what in the world would I do? Unless I am going in the peace corps or babysitting my grandkids--no hobby or volunteer board would make me as happy as my part time job. I am not a homebody.
Man, reading all the "what would I do?" posts is bringing me down. I had the day off yesterday and it was so glorious to have a weekday off. I could definitely get used to it, quickly. LOL.
